Is eating healthy expensive?

Eating healthy is expensive. Or so most people say.

Is it though?

Yes, it could be, depending on your definition of healthy eating.??

As of a few years ago, I would have told you that nutrition and eating healthy is for the rich.????

Here is how it all started. I never thought I would become a nutritionist, or that I would fall in love with this course so much that I wanted to practice it. In high school, my desk mate was the one who wanted to become a nutritionist. And while she spoke about the course, she told me how marketable it was, and how she couldn't wait to establish herself as a nutritionist who works exclusively with politicians.? ??

Now thanks to 15-year-old Zani’s imagination, here's what I concluded: For her to want to work with politicians so much, they must be sick. Why else would they need nutritionists? I had never seen one in my life yet I was okay.??♂?

Also, to eat healthily, I'd need to have money. Grocery shopping in the supermarket, purchasing produce and eating vegetables whose names I could not even pronounce yet, having a table full of assorted dishes to choose from, with appetizers, a course meal, and dessert made up of a fruit salad with 7 different types of exotic fruits. The beauty of having an uninhibited imagination. Well, you can fully understand why I couldn't wait to get rich to eat healthy.??

Fast forward to the first time we did meal planning in campus and I realized that I could eat Sukuma Wiki and get similar nutrients that I could get from Swiss chard.??

I suppose you may have the same perception that to eat healthily you must have money. Well, that’s not exactly true. Here’s what you can do to ensure that you eat healthy and don’t break your bank account.

  1. Choose seasonal produce: Fruits and vegetables in season are usually less expensive, more flavorful, and fresher. They’re harvested at peak ripeness and don’t need to travel long distances, thus reducing costs.?
  2. Buy Generic Brands: opt for generic brands instead of name brands. They’re usually comparable in quality and nutritional value but come at a lower price.?
  3. Practice meal planning: Planning your meals saves time and money. Create a weekly meal plan based on affordable, nutritious ingredients, draft a shopping list, and prepare your meals. Focus on a few key ingredients and rotate recipes to add diversity to your diet. This helps you buy only what you need, reducing waste and expenses.?
  4. Affordable Protein Sources: Meat can be a significant expense. Beans, lentils, eggs, and fish are excellent alternatives that are versatile, nutritious, and more affordable.?
  5. Frozen Fruits and Vegetables: These are often more affordable than fresh produce and retain their nutrients. They can be used in smoothies, stir-fries, or as side dishes.?
  6. Bulk Buying: Purchase staple foods like rice, oats, and whole grains in bulk. They have a longer shelf life and are cost-effective.?
  7. Grow Your Own: If possible, grow herbs or small vegetables at home. Even a windowsill garden can provide fresh produce at an affordable price.?
  8. Limit processed foods: Processed snacks and convenience meals can be expensive. opt for whole foods instead.?
  9. Cook in batches: Prepare large portions and freeze leftovers. This reduces food waste and saves time on busy days.
  10. Shop smart: Take advantage of sales and discounts. Consider shopping at budget-friendly stores or using loyalty programs to save money.
  11. Drink water: Choosing water over sugary beverages is not only healthier but also more budget-friendly.
  12. Educate Yourself: Learn about affordable, nutrient-dense foods. Eating healthy doesn’t have to be complicated or costly. Remember, eating healthy is about smart choices, not deep pockets. See you on the more nutritious side!
