Quote:

“When I eat, I eat, when I sleep, I sleep.” - Zen Master Hiakajo Roshi

Reflection:

A Zen student once asked his master:

“Master, how do you put meditation into action? How do you integrate it into everyday life?”

“By eating and by sleeping,” replied the master.

“But master, everybody sleeps and everybody eats."

“But not everybody eats when they eat, and not everybody sleeps when they sleep."

When it comes to meditation, we must remember what really matters is not just our seated practice but taking the calm and centered state of mind we experience in meditation and bringing it into everything we do outside of meditation.

To eat when you eat and sleep when you sleep means to be completely present in all your actions.

Action:

Today, no matter what task you find yourself in — doing dishes, brushing your teeth, sending emails, going for a walk, eating lunch — work on trying to be there completely. If you find that your mind is taking you elsewhere, take a deep breath and bring it back to where it should be.

That’s how to integrate your meditation practice into your life.

Have a mindful Wednesday and see you next week!
