Eat, sleep, work repeat…
…Why social media is the most important thing for your people and your business.
The pandemic has been hard on everyone. Whether you think that lockdowns were a good or bad idea, whether you have been vaccinated or not, whether you have been really careful or have not seen covid as a major personal threat…whatever your position may be how we have behaved as individuals, communities , societies and a planet has been massively impacted by the pandemic over the last two years.
We have all had a different experience - I live in a very rural environment where (literally) I cold go out for a walk for an hour and not see another human, many people live in high density housing in cities snd so didn’t have the same freedoms during the heaviest restrictions that I enjoyed.
But for most people that I have spoken to, they have felt that their life took on a very formulaic feel. To paraphrase Fatboy Slim “Eat, sleep, work repeat…” Mine too.
I got up in the morning, sat at my desk, did my work, went for a walk, did more work, watched a little TV, went to bed. And that was it. Every day. Day after day. For 2 years.
This “house arrest” was on the back of my previous few years where I would be in London two days per week, and abroad eight days per month on average.
This ended and I was working from home for 600+ days straight.
I’m not bemoaning this, although it was a little bit of a shock, but I know that many many people have had the same experience. I expect that this has changed them…I know it has certainly changed me and it has certainly changed how we all work.

For two years I never met a client face to face. As a business we found new clients, won the business, built relationships, delivered projects and said goodbye…having never met them face to face.
On a personal level I think that social media has been a lifeline for us all. We have been able to keep in touch with old friends and meet new ones, we have been able to shout and scream, to protest and to travel in our minds to different places.
Prior to the pandemic this would have been unheard of.
My point is that social media has been one of the most important technology (and behavioural) platforms we have and has proven its worth in so many ways through this difficult period.
It has also left an indelible imprint on how we work. No longer is there an expectation from prospects that they will necessarily meet you, certainly that they will meet you before they commission the work. It has changed us all - how we work, how our contacts work, how we think…
Have you rolled this in to your strategy though? Have you considered what this actually means for how you work? Have you based your business moving forward on different principles to those from the pre-pandemic world?
If not, then you need to do it and you need to do it NOW.
Everything has changed. There is no “back to normal” there is a new normal and that means your business needs to adapt.
Do not try to build you business enthralled to the past because we have all moved on…even you.

2 年I couldn’t agree more with your sentiments, Adam Gray. Personally, I have grown more over the last two years because of social media and how I’m using social media to achieve my life’s purpose than I grew in years. Social media gave me access to people, cultures, and opportunities that gatekeepers and proximity would have prevented. My story can be anyone’s story.

2 年Indeed, we cannot deny the impact of covid. And indeed, social platforms were our saviours in many ways as you mentioned: to keep / get relations, including commercial ones and also to learn and enjoy a LOT! Hope to meet the DLA ignite tribe in person one day !

2 年Looks like millionaires row to me. When lockdown was released the luxury goods market went crazy, people hadn't been spending and to start with travel was limited. Covid - who would have thought it. One issue is... many people were affected financially by the Covid impact on the economy, and now there's a second impact looming over us like a dark cloud that's a possible recession attributable to? Largely Putin.

2 年Great post Adam. Social media is the game changer for so many things in life now. The biggest transition I would say is the image of what people call Social Media. It's not all about where we are and what we are eating at that moment, it's the tool that gets you into the person, group or business without relying on cold calling. Social media also helps business see market changes quickly and not have to wait for a committee to decide what direction to go. On a personal level it helps interact people who would never meet. To interact firstly on a social level that we would never interact due to distance, time and life. It also spreads the conversation, thoughts and idea's to parts of the world you would never reach. Used correctly, this is the future to building lifestyles, communities and business, though we like it or not. It can help people get out in the world, where after what we have went through, has taken a toll of people's well being and finances. It introduces people to new an fresh idea's, to like minded people who are feeling the same way they do and how they can help them change, grow and prosper. In the end it's not just about business, it's about people and how together we can build better world's around us.
