Eat Less, Move More ??

Eat Less, Move More ??

AUGH! How many times have we been told, if you want to get "healthy," you need to EAT LESS, MOVE MORE?

So, how's that working for everyone? ?? Exactly! But why? I mean why doesn't eat less, move more work? ?? Isn't it all about Calories and the idea of Calories in vs Calories out (CICO)?

NO and here are a few reasons why CICO does NOTHING to get you "healthy."

  1. First, let me say this - losing weight does not make you "healthy," but if you get healthy, the weight will come off, for good.
  2. Second, losing weight isn't really what any of us want to do. Losing weight can happen if you lose a limb. Losing weight can also be loss of water, muscle mass, or bone density. It's losing fat that we want.
  3. Third, if you want to lose weight - stop eating. You don't have to work out. You most likely won't be able to after long anyway. I mean, have you seen the show Naked and Afraid? ???? No one is running anywhere, and yet after a few weeks of not eating, they have lost 20+ lbs (of water, bone density, muscle mass, and oh yeah, fat too). But how long do you think that lasts? You know, the whole not eating anymore idea?

Now that we've got that out of the way, what is a calorie?

Simply put, a calorie is a unit of energy, created by scientists trying to figure out the amount of heat released when different foods are burned in a laboratory. ??

Our bodies did not create the calorie - scientists did. All our body knows is what it needs to do with the food and drink that we put in it, to keep us alive. It is up to our metabolic system to convert (metabolize) what we eat into fuel for energy.

When your metabolic system becomes dysfunctional and is no longer able to create energy from what you eat, it is stored as fat making fat accumulation an energy problem, not a calorie problem. That is why when you restore the metabolic function, the fat goes away, and you lose fat.

??Now if you're struggling reading any further, please don't quit now. ?? This is probably the most important part of this newsletter. ??

Caloric intake and caloric output are DEPENDENT variables. If you DECREASE the calories in, your body will DECREASE the calories out. That means if you reduce your calories in by 25%, there will be an AUTOMATIC 25% decrease in calories burned. ??

?? Example: Let's say that you normally make & spend $100K per year (Money IN, Money OUT). ??

Now imagine you get a pay cut & make $25K less.??

What happens to the amount of money you spend? ??

Would you keep spending $100K/year? No. You'd reduce your money OUT by $25K/yr to balance out your budget, or even reduce it a bit more, just to give you some wiggle room.

The money you make & the money you spend are DEPENDENT variables. Reducing one will reduce the other, just like calories.

?? We've been told that 1 lb of body fat = 3500 calories, so if we reduce calories by 500 calories every day, we should lose 1 lb of body fat per week (500 calories X 7 days = 3500 calories).

If that math makes sense, then we can also say that by reducing calories by 500/day, after 200 weeks, we would lose 200 lbs & weigh zero? Of course not. The body must, at some point, reduce its expenditure to meet the lower calorie intake. This adaptation occurs almost immediately & continues long-term.

??If you decrease your calories by 500 per day, say from 2000 calories to 1500 calories, every day, doesn't the 1500 calorie diet become the new normal? And 500 calories less than what? Yesterday? Tomorrow? Last year??? Or if you eat 2000 calories Monday and reduce by 500 calories each day, by Friday you have zero calories you can eat. ?? Anyone else have a hard time believing this makes sense? ??♂???♀??? And how does that make you "healthy"? ??

?? The Calories In, Calories Out or Eat Less, Move More theories are flawed because they are impossible to sustain. In order to lose more weight, you must continue to reduce your calories in. How long can you do that? And how "healthy" do you think that is?

You can't calorie restrict forever, so what happens when you start replenishing your body with calories again? You quickly gain the weight back & it doesn’t stop there. It continues until your weight is even higher than where you started.

If you want to lose weight (which includes water, muscle, bone, & fat), then stop eating. You'll lose weight, but you won't be healthy.

If you want to get healthy, so that you can burn the fat on your body as fuel, restore your metabolic function. No amount of hours at the gym will restore this lost function.

?? Stop starving yourself & beating yourself up for not spending time "working out." Ditch the whole calories in, calories out theory & start focusing on what matters: your metabolic health. Once your metabolic system is running as it should, the weight will come off & your chronic health conditions & diseases will go away. Then you'll be healthy. ??
