October is prime harvest time in Japan. From Japanese pears, to persimmon fruit, to rice, soba noodles and sake, there is a vast offer of delights that hit their peak. With all this deliciousness comes gatherings across the country as festivals, exhibitions and experiences all celebrate the diversity of Japan’s gastronomy.

Our newsletter this month taps into this special time of the year, with a celebration of a 100th anniversary, new impetus in Japan’s food security, a special gathering of brand leaders we have planned, and an insight from the Eat Magazine archive into raising pigs.

We’ll be exploring the challenges and opportunities for businesses and brands in Japan today and what this could mean for the country tomorrow.

Keep Growing

For the past 10 years we have been helping LIXIL , one of the world’s largest sanitation and housing firms, bring to life their purpose of making better homes a reality for everyone. An important part of supporting this purpose is good management. Music for 100 Years

Earlier this month YASUI ARCHITECTS & ENGINEERS, INC. celebrated their 100th anniversary with a concert by the Kansai Philharmonic Orchestra at Suntory Hall in Tokyo – a stunning facility designed by Yasui back in 1986. The Eat design and production team were hard at work getting booklets, invitations and materials ready in time for the concert and were able see their work in action when they attended the magical performance. A Second Harvest

The Eat team this month attended the annual food bank symposium led by our long-term social enterprise partner Second Harvest Japan . The symposium brought together government departments, corporates and food banks to develop new initiatives that will bring food security to some of the most disadvantaged groups in Japan. What are some of the illuminating brand stories we’ve seen come out of Japan this month?

1. Japanese frozen food company Edamame is taking its famous sake ice cream global after announcing its first overseas manufacturing unit in Taiwan.

2. If you’ve ever been curious to know what happens to an airplane at the end of its life, Japanese airline All Nippon Airways has announced tours to Victorville Airport in California, USA – an ‘airplane graveyard’ with more than 150 retired planes.

3. 英伟达 -backed Japanese cloud services firm Ubitus K.K. has announced it wants to build a new data center in Japan but wants nuclear power to be available nearby, at a time when nuclear power in the country is still highly contentious.?
