Powered Rocket
What you need
Plastic bottle, cork, clingfilm, vinegar, baking soda, 3 straws, sticky tape, colouring pens/ pencils, funnel and paper.
Instructions
Step 1. Decorating your rocket is the most important thing! Ok well the science behind it is the most important, but for your children they will want to make it their own. I would suggest to measure paper to fit a sleeve around your bottle, cut and then put your design on it. Then secure with sticky tape to your rocket.
* Sleeve inspiration
Step 2. With your bottle upside down (neck and opening pointing down) place a straw on the side of the bottle (ensure that the straw would touch the floor before the bottle does). Now draw a line level around the bottle and attach 3 straws with sticky tape. You should try to ensure that your rocket points directly up or it could fly into your fence haha.
Step 3. Make sure that your cork tightly fits into the necks opening. If not this is where you can coat the cork in clingfilm to bulk it out. You want to ensure that the cork allows the pressure to build up in the bottle.
Step 4. Pour your vinegar into the bottle. Now be aware you'll need more baking/ soda powder than vinegar but I would ensure you have at least 2 adult fingers worth (measuring from the bottle).
Step 5. If you are not outside already move outside (read this step in full first). Insert the funnel and pour your powder into the bottle. Quickly seal the bottle with you cork, turn your bottle upside-down and place the straws on the floor and move away. It will take a few seconds but lift off will happen.
Be aware this is a science experiment friendly for home, but please be careful that you are not overzealous with the vinegar and powder. Being an experiment the fun is in getting the best results so start off with smaller amounts and build up to get the reaction you want. Whilst I would not suggest something dangerous for children to try be sensible and be safe and remember this is your experiment and you are responsible for its results (which is why you want to take your time).
*Add one of the official Apollo badges to your rocket and have fun researching the mission for your badge!
As always enjoy your time crafting with your children this sort of time does not come round too often!
