Is the easy holding you back?

Is the easy holding you back?

I was asked the other day what I thought held most people back.

It was a great question, to which I have a 101 answers.

?

  • If you can't be Honest about where you are, it'll hold you back.
  • If you're stuck in the past, it'll hold you back.
  • If you're stuck in fear of possible catastrophic futures, it'll hold you back.
  • If you procrastinate, it'll hold you back.
  • If you're stuck in the classic no time, no money, no energy loop, it'll hold you back.
  • If you don't have a clear view of where you're going, it'll hold you back.
  • If you don't have a passionate reason to make things happen, it'll hold you back.
  • If you listen to the naysayers, it'll hold you back.
  • If you don't have the right supporters in your corner, it'll hold you back.
  • If you don't have a plan, it'll hold you back.

?I could go on, but I think you get the point, there's a lot of reasons.

?

The ONE thing in common

Here's the thing though, what do all these things have in common that's holding people back?

They aren't taking Action to break through the things holding them back.

People are aware they want things to change or improve. They're more often than not aware of why they feel things aren't changing or improving.

But often they aren't taking the Action to break free. They aren't getting resourceful. They aren't taking responsibility and accountability. They aren't taking the opportunities available to them.

I know that sounds harsh. The truth though, is that support and resources are freely available all around us. We have more resources at our finger tips than anyone else in history. There are people offering help. There are events ready to help. There are programmes ready to help. There are videos, articles, books ready to help. Heck, nowadays there's even a.i. ready to help.

The help to do ANYTHING in our personal or professional lives is available - and no, it doesn't all come with a huge price tag, in fact the vast majority of it is free.

This will set you free

I say all of this with kindness, caring and empathy. I know it can feel tough. I know what it's like to feel hopeless, worthless, not good enough. I know what it's like to work hard on things, only for them to totally flop. I know what it's like to not make the progress you so desperately want. I know what it's like to work yourself into the ground. I know what it's like to not have the answers.

Any despair I used to feel in these situations though, disappeared when I realised just how much control and choice I have in my life.

This is MY life.

If I don't like something, what am I going to do about it? Who am I going to reach out to, who has the experience I need that can help? What can I sign up to that will help me move forward, because someone's sharing valuable lessons they've learnt? Who can I start watching, reading or listening to that can help shift my perspective and inform my next steps?

The legendary Jim Rohn once said that to move himself out of being broke and unhappy he figured out what was easy for him and took action on it. When asked if it was so easy, why didn't everyone do it ... he responded, because it's also easy not to. Now, he didn't say that it didn't take some courage or faith to take action. But what he did do was focus on the simple, easy actions he could take, and built on them from there.

Maybe, therefore, if we're feeling stuck, it would be helpful to strip things back from the complicated world, solutions and emotions we so often get caught up in ... and simply choose our easy ... ideally, a simple, easy action we can take that moves us forward.

Send a message, make a call, watch a video, read an article or book, listen to a podcast or audio book, sign up to an event or programme. Then take another easy action based on what you learn ... and repeat.

Yes, it may take courage, but it sure would be a shame if something easy was responsible for holding you back.

What do you think?
