There are no easy A’s in ASR accuracy

While transcription has been a primary use case for automatic speech recognition (ASR) technology, its potential extends far beyond that. ASR serves as the foundation for a wide range of AI-powered productivity tools, from meeting assistants to virtual assistants and content generation platforms, but not all services are created equal.

As the field becomes flooded with a variety of AI-powered meeting assistants, the challenge lies in identifying which services can deliver reliable and accurate results. Accuracy can make or break productivity gains and influence critical decision-making.

How can teams determine the best provider to use and, more importantly, trust?

When evaluating AI productivity platforms, it's crucial to consider the quality of the ASR component. It isn’t as simple as selecting the best pair of running shoes or Bluetooth speakers. In those cases, what’s “best” is oftentimes a subjective opinion supported by personal preference and brand loyalty. But when measuring the efficacy of ASR technology, objective benchmarks and performance metrics are essential. The credibility of a situation is at stake.?

Rev has been collecting and transcribing data to train its ASR models for over a decade. To affirm users’ confidence in our transcriptions, we partnered with an independent benchmarking service to deliver objective evaluations of not just ours, but eight other leading ASR providers: AssemblyAI, AWS, Deepgram, Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, Otter, and Speechmatics.?

The study was designed to capture a wide range of speaking scenarios and media formats, reflecting the diverse applications of AI-powered speech technologies in meetings and speech analysis. This approach allowed us to evaluate and compare each service's performance.

How well do they handle transcription in noisy environments or when the speaker is far from the microphone?

Which providers excel at transcribing news and political speech, or interpreting legal language in court settings??

These are just a few of the metrics posed in Rev’s “The State of ASR” benchmark report.?

We don’t want to brag too much, but Rev surpassed Otter by 24.1%, and Google by an impressive 60.5% in ASR accuracy. Rev also performed better than any other ASR provider in noisy environments.
