Easy 9-Step Process: From Idea to Logo Design
Creating an eye-catching logo involves more than just artistic expression—it’s a strategic process that combines creativity, client collaboration, and attention to detail.?
These are the nine steps I took to turn an idea into a striking logo for Owl Sessions:
1. Client Consultation: Gathering Ideas
Begin by sitting down with your client. Have them share their vision, preferences, and any initial ideas they might have. Ask questions like:
For this project, my client wanted an owl logo that looked similar to one of her tattoos but more cartoon-like. She also asked to customize “Owl Sessions” with leaves surrounding the “O”.
2. Element Exploration: Likes and Dislikes
Discuss the elements they like and dislike. Explore existing logos together to identify patterns or styles that resonate with them. This step helps you understand their taste and preferences.
By looking at her tattoo and art references, I saw that she liked the emphasized eyes that seemed to look right through you. I also noticed that one of the references had a specific leaf pattern that's adjacent to the owl tattoo. I noted that she wanted to stick with a serif font from the reference.?
3. Listening Intently: Excitement Matters
Pay close attention to their excitement level during discussions. Note which ideas make their voice perk up. These are the ones you’ll want to explore further.
As I showed her similar looks, she seemed to get more excited over a certain house music look, which would explain the arch element.?
4. Hierarchy Hunt: Finding Matches
Look for commonalities among the ideas. Are there recurring shapes, symbols, or themes? Consider what stands out the most? These insights will guide your design process.
I noticed that she was trying to find a specific style that would look good with a raw nature theme.?
5. Client’s Favorites: Narrowing Down
Ask your client to choose their favorite concepts. Aim for a shortlist of ideas that resonate with them. These will serve as the foundation for the final design.
Altogether, the client seemed like she liked the idea of leaves surrounding the owl with the tree branches underneath. She also chose designs that blended more smoothly together. This had to do with finding a balance of leaves and the owl.

6. Top Four Selection: Refining Choices
Together, narrow it down to the top four choices. Discuss the pros and cons of each. Consider factors like scalability, versatility, and relevance to the brand.
When we narrowed down the top four, it came down to how the scale of the owl should be presented. We had different-sized owls and the way the wings were presented.
7. The Final Pick: One Logo to Rule Them All
From the top four, select the one that aligns best with the brand’s identity. This logo will represent the business across various platforms.
Instead of sitting and comparing them too long, I asked her to look at the eyes of the owl. This was one of the first details she said was a priority. This made it a no-brainer decision.?
8. Replication and Customization: Fine-Tuning Details
Now comes the technical part. Replicate the chosen design digitally. Pay attention to details like font selection, spacing, and proportions. Customize where needed.
As soon as I started to customize, I had to design an arch that is similar to the reference. I paid attention to the curve around the O and the arch when writing "Owl Sessions".?
9. Client Approval and Implementation
Present the refined logo to your client. Seek their approval and make any necessary adjustments. Once approved, integrate the logo into their branding materials, website, and social media profiles.
Lastly, I showed her my work and got her approval. My client updated the logo on her social media profile within minutes.?
Takeaway
Remember, a logo isn’t just an image—it’s a visual representation of a brand’s personality and values.?
By following this process, you’ll create a logo that resonates with your client and leaves a lasting impression.
I’m happy to meet her vision and help others in their early stages.?
