Discovering the Ancient Roots of Coaching
In recent years, coaching and mentoring have emerged as transformative practices for personal and professional growth. However, the roots of coaching can be traced back to ancient Eastern Wisdom traditions, where the master-disciple relationship has long been a means of transmitting knowledge and facilitating self-discovery. By exploring these roots, we gain a holistic understanding of the purpose of coaching and its potential and insights into the essence of this powerful practice.
Navigating the Journey of Self-Discovery
At its core, coaching is a collaborative partnership to facilitate growth, development, and transformation. Eastern Wisdom views coaching as a means to create harmony between the outer aspects of the self, known as the frame, and the inner core, referred to as the being. The coach serves as a guide, utilizing knowledge and expertise to support the journey of a seeker to self-discovery and realization. This holistic approach recognizes the interconnectedness of performance and overall well-being, emphasizing the importance of aligning one's actions with their true nature. Coaching in Eastern Wisdom is most effective when both the coach and the Coachee (seeker) have a high level of awareness and receptivity, allowing for the optimal transmission and integration of Wisdom.
Coach is normally assumed to have the peak level of awareness, but those who receive coaching have many personal, professional, and social problems and challenges. He approached the coach to address the challenges in a state of turmoil, what Eastern Wisdom calls impurity of the mind. Eastern Wisdom guides the seeker ( Coachee) on how to purify the mind to receive knowledge at an optimum level, aiming at transformation, lifestyle changes, purity of mind, and increasing self-awareness.
The Two Dimensions of the Self: Aligning the Frame(Human) and the Being- Human Being
Eastern Wisdom perceives the human being as a complex, multi-layered entity consisting of two main components: the frame (Human) and the being. The frame encompasses the physical body, breath, mind, emotions, intellect, and ego – the outer aspects of the self. On the other hand, Being represents the deep, inner core of existence, the true self beyond the limitations of the ego and the fluctuations of the mind. Coaching in Eastern Wisdom aims to create a harmonious alignment between these two dimensions, facilitating a journey of self-discovery and realization. At the same time, it leads to excellence in personal, professional, social, and family lives.
Consider a highly successful person in their career but feels unfulfilled and disconnected from their true passions. In this case, their frame (professional achievements) is not aligned with their being (inner values and aspirations). Coaching in Eastern Wisdom would aim to create a harmonious alignment between these two dimensions, facilitating a journey of self-discovery and realization.

The Master-Disciple Tradition: Transmitting Wisdom Through Direct Experience
Coaching has been formalized through the master-disciple relationship in Eastern Wisdom, such as yoga and Vedanta. This sacred bond involves transmitting knowledge and Wisdom from the master to the disciple through direct experience and guidance. The master, having already traversed the path to self-realization, embodies the teachings, offering personalized support and transformative challenges to help the disciples overcome limitations and awaken their true nature.
The importance of the master-disciple relationship is emphasized in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. The master, known as the guru, is described as the one who dispels the darkness of ignorance and guides the disciple toward self-realization. The disciple, through their dedication and surrender to the master's teachings, gradually awakens to their true nature.
