Easter Themed Activities for 1 to 2 Year Olds | Help Your Child Develop Key Skills

Easter Themed Activities for 1 to 2 Year Olds | Help Your Child Develop Key Skills

Are you a parent to a one-year-old? I am, and with Easter coming up, I decided to create some fun activities for my daughter. To do this quickly and effectively, I used a special tool I made called Octoped's EYFS Explorer. It's designed to make lesson planning faster and gave me lots of activity ideas suited for my daughter's age.

After gathering my ideas, I organised them into a table using Excel and then turned them into a CSV file. I then used Canva to make these ideas look great visually, combining my data with a beautiful template.

Finally, I got creative on MidJourney and added my own original images.

This process made creating educational activities much easier and more enjoyable. It saved me time and added more variety to our playtime. I'm excited to share these activities with you and would love to hear if you try them with your kids. Nursery teachers, feel free to share these ideas with parents, too. Let's make early learning fun and start the adventure at home. ??

?? Easter Egg Storytime

Easter is a time of joy, and what better way to celebrate than with a story? Sit down with your little one and explore an Easter egg-themed book. As you turn the pages, encourage your child to point to and name the colors and objects they see. This simple activity not only enhances their vocabulary but also nurtures their curiosity and love for reading. It's a wonderful way to bond and make Easter even more special.

Safety Warning: Ensure the book's edges are soft or rounded to prevent any accidental scrapes, and always supervise your child during storytime to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

Egg Talk: A Hide and Seek Adventure ??

This fun and educational activity promotes language development and colour recognition. Hide a plastic Easter egg in the room or garden and give your child hints to find it, using phrases like "It's near something yellow" or "It's under the table." When your child finds the egg, celebrate their success and encourage them to hide it for you to find. This turn-taking game boosts their listening skills and teaches them about following directions and basic colours.

Safety Warning: Choose a large, child-safe plastic egg that poses no choking hazard, and always supervise the game to ensure the egg is used safely and appropriately.

Discovering Yoga Through Storytime

Dive into a playful adventure with your toddler this Easter! Imagine transforming your living room into a little yoga studio where storytime meets stretch time. With "Easter & Spring" themed yoga, watch your little one light up as they match poses with names like the "Bunny Hop" or the "Chick Stretch."

It's not just fun; it's a clever way to blend physical activity with early literacy. As you flow from one pose to the next, guided by a whimsical story, your child will not only learn to recognize and name different poses but also connect these movements with words.

The real magic happens when, after your yoga journey, they gleefully recall and sequence the poses all by themselves. It's a simple, joyful way to introduce structure, memory skills, and a dash of fitness into their world. Remember, these activities are just a starting point to inspire learning and laughter, making every moment a discovery.

Pose Cards for Easter Fun

To build on the last activity, you can create Pose Cards together. These cards should have pictures (or drawings) and names of simple yoga poses. This activity not only introduces your little one to the joy of physical movement but also bridges it with language learning. By encouraging your child to identify the pose and articulate its name, you're fostering their ability to recognise names and connect physical activity with verbal expressions. It's a fantastic way to blend fun with foundational literacy skills.

Story Sequencing Through Yoga

Building on the Pose Cards activity, you can enhance your child's learning experience with Story Sequencing. After engaging in a series of yoga poses that narrate a story, perhaps one that leads a curious bunny on a hunt for Easter eggs, ask your child to recall the poses in the sequence they were performed. This exercise not only reinforces the physical aspect of the yoga poses but also stimulates their memory and understanding of sequence and order. It's a gentle but effective way to develop their narrative skills and ability to retell activities, crucial components of early literacy development.

Enhancing Literacy Through Physical Activity

Introducing young learners to the joy of combining literacy with physical activity offers a unique approach to development. By creating Pose Cards that display pictures and names of simple yoga poses, children not only recognise the names of poses but also connect these physical activities with verbal expressions. Following a sequence of activities becomes an engaging task as children are encouraged to find specific Pose Cards and articulate the pose's name. This method serves as a guide to foster early literacy skills in a fun and interactive manner. Moreover, the key observation checkpoint involves recalling and retelling the activities in order, further enhancing memory and narrative skills. These activities, while just a guide, offer a structured yet flexible approach to learning that can be tailored to each child's pace and interests.

Bunny Hops and Balancing Acts

As your child delves into the bunny hops, observe their growing confidence in balancing and coordinating their movements. The act of mimicking Easter's beloved animals not only captivates their imagination but also encourages them to engage fully in physical activity. This playful approach to yoga introduces them to the importance of physical exercise in a way that feels more like a game than a workout. It's a wonderful opportunity to bond, laugh, and create memorable moments together, all while developing essential motor skills.

Celebrating Growth and Guidance

Throughout this Easter Yoga Adventure, your keen observations will play a crucial role in nurturing your child's love for physical activity. The enthusiasm they show as they hop like a bunny or stretch like a blooming flower is a key checkpoint in their developmental journey. It reflects their ability to listen, follow directions, and express joy through movement. These moments of guided play not only strengthen their physical abilities but also build a foundation for a lifetime of active living. So, embrace the silliness, cheer on their efforts, and cherish the leaps and bounds of their development.

Egg Emotions: A Journey Through Feelings

Dive into the world of emotions with your toddler using Easter eggs as your guide. Imagine each egg painted with a different facial expression - joy, surprise, sadness, and more. As you and your child explore these "Egg Emotions," ask them, "How does this egg feel?" This simple question opens the door to rich conversations about feelings, helping your child to recognise and name different emotions. It's a playful yet profound way to enhance their personal, social, and emotional development, teaching them the valuable skill of empathy from an early age. This Easter, let these uniquely expressive eggs be a gateway to understanding and expressing emotions in a fun and relatable way.

Sharing the Basket: Cultivating Kindness and Cooperation

Incorporate the spirit of Easter into teaching your child about the joys of sharing through "Sharing the Basket." This activity involves taking turns to place Easter eggs into a basket, a simple yet effective way to foster sharing skills and cooperative play. As each child waits for their turn and sees the joy their friend gets from adding an egg, they learn not just about taking turns, but also about empathy and the happiness that comes from shared experiences. This game goes beyond just fun; it lays the foundation for building strong relationships and developing social skills in a natural, enjoyable manner.

Observing Growth: Empathy and Connections Blossom

As your child engages with Egg Emotions and practices Sharing the Basket, take a moment to observe their development. You'll see them starting to recognise and name different emotions, showing empathy towards others, and learning the value of sharing and taking turns. These key observation checkpoints are milestones in their personal, social, and emotional growth. By fostering these skills early on, you're helping your child build the foundation for healthy relationships with their peers. This Easter-themed learning is not just about the eggs and the bunnies; it's about nurturing a heart that understands, cares, and cooperates.

Blossoming Minds: Meditation through Nature and Play

Introduce your child to the calming practice of meditation with a twist of nature and play, using roses and bubbles to guide their journey towards personal and emotional management. "Smell the Roses, Blow the Bubbles" is a tactile and engaging activity that encourages mindfulness and breath control in a way that is accessible and enjoyable for 1 - 2-year-olds.

By gently smelling a rose, they focus on the sensation and fragrance, pulling their attention to the present moment. Then, by blowing bubbles, they learn to control their breath, a fundamental aspect of meditation. Before beginning, ensure to remove any thorns from the roses to prevent pricks and check for allergies to ensure a safe and serene experience.

This activity is not just about the act of smelling and blowing; it's about opening a doorway to emotional self-regulation, providing them with tools to calm their mind and body from an early age. Through this simple yet profound practice, your child begins to learn the power of their senses and breath in managing emotions, laying the groundwork for a balanced and mindful future.

Counting Eggs: A Hopping Start to Mathematics

Embark on a delightful journey into the world of numbers with "Counting Eggs," a playful activity that combines the festive spirit of Easter with early mathematical concepts. After spending a fun session decorating eggs, take the opportunity to count them together with your child. This simple exercise not only introduces them to the basics of counting but also brings a sense of achievement and joy as they tally up their beautifully decorated eggs. It's a perfect way to blend creativity with learning, making their first steps into mathematics as colourful and engaging as the eggs they have proudly decorated.

Creative Numbers: Drawing and Decorating Eggs

Unleash your child's creativity and numerical understanding with just a big piece of paper and some baby-safe crayons or pens. Together, draw and decorate egg shapes, numbering each one as you go along.

This hands-on activity is more than just an artistic endeavour; it's a foundational lesson in recognising numbers and understanding their sequence.

As you and your child decorate each numbered egg, you're not only fostering their artistic skills but also subtly introducing them to the world of mathematics in a fun, engaging way. It's an excellent method for making the concept of numbers tangible and exciting.

Egg Sorter: Learning Sizes and Sorting

Dive into the exciting world of sorting with the "Egg Sorter" activity, where Easter eggs become the main characters in a lesson about size and categorisation. Encourage your child to sort eggs into different baskets based on their size, from big to small. This activity does more than just keep your little one engaged; it helps them understand the language of size, recognise patterns, and develop their sorting skills. As they decide which egg goes where, they're making connections about size and differences, laying down the cognitive groundwork for mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills in a festive, Easter-themed context.

Easter Egg Planting: A Seed of Curiosity

Dive into the wonders of nature with your child this Easter through "Easter Egg Planting," a unique and engaging activity that marries the festive spirit with educational exploration. Using empty eggshells as pots, plant flower seeds together and embark on a fascinating journey discussing what plants need to grow. This hands-on experience not only answers the curious question, "What does a plant need to grow?" but also instills a sense of responsibility and care in your child as they nurture their plant from a seed. It's a beautiful metaphor for growth and renewal, perfectly capturing the essence of spring.

Nurturing Natural Observers

As your little one gets their hands dirty with Easter Egg Planting, they become not just gardeners but keen observers of the living world. Watch as they marvel at the plants and animals around them, fostering a deep appreciation and curiosity for nature. This activity is an open door to explore the natural world, encouraging your child to notice and enjoy the beauty and intricacies of the environment. Their excitement and wonder as they witness a seed sprouting in an eggshell pot serve as a reminder of the simple joys and discoveries that nature offers.

Recognising the Signs of Spring

Participating in Easter Egg Planting offers a prime opportunity for children to recognise changes in their surroundings, marking a foundational understanding of the world. As they care for their eggshell-planted seeds, they'll notice the days getting longer, the weather warming, and perhaps other plants in the garden beginning to bloom. These observations highlight the changing seasons, specifically the transition into spring, teaching them about the cyclical nature of the environment and how it affects the plants and animals they're so curious about.

Celebrating Discoveries Together

One of the most joyous moments in any Easter celebration is the thrill of finding an egg during an egg hunt. When a child finds an egg first, their delight is contagious, offering a perfect moment to celebrate not just their find but also the shared happiness of discovery. This shared joy is a powerful tool in teaching children about empathy, cooperation, and the value of enjoying experiences together. It mirrors the excitement of watching their Easter egg plants grow, making every small discovery a cause for celebration. Through activities like Easter Egg Planting, children learn to share these moments of joy, reinforcing the importance of communal experiences and the wonders of exploring the world together.

Nurturing Life: Observations and Care

As days pass, this experiment becomes a daily ritual of nurturing and observation. Through the simple acts of watering the plant, ensuring it gets enough sunlight, and offering positive affirmations, your child learns the vital components that contribute to growth. This activity not only teaches the basics of plant care but also subtly introduces the concept that positivity and attention can have a tangible impact on well-being and development, a lesson that extends far beyond gardening.

After some time, the moment of revelation arrives. Together, you compare the fate of the two seeds. The seed that was cherished, watered, and exposed to sunlight proudly displays its sprouts, reaching up towards the warmth of the light, while its neglected counterpart remains dormant, a silent testament to the lack of care. This visual comparison starkly illustrates the effects of care and neglect, offering a powerful, hands-on lesson about the needs of living things and the consequences of our actions, or lack thereof.

This experiment goes deeper than just understanding how plants grow; it's a metaphor for the nurturing and positive reinforcement needed in all aspects of life. As your child witnesses the stark difference between the two seeds, it sparks a conversation about empathy, kindness, and the importance of caring for those around us. It's a moment of learning that ties the beauty of nature to the power of human touch and attention, showing that with the right care and positive environment, we can all thrive. This Easter activity is not just about gardening; it's about planting the seeds of compassion and care in the hearts of young learners.

Egg Decorating: Unleashing Creativity

Dive into a world of colour and creativity with "Egg Decorating," an activity that transforms ordinary hard-boiled eggs into vibrant masterpieces. Armed with baby-safe paints or markers, invite your little one to unleash their imagination on the smooth canvas of an egg. This hands-on experience is more than just an art project; it's a chance for children to explore the endless possibilities of patterns, colours, and designs. As they select their hues and plan their patterns, they're not just decorating eggs; they're learning to make choices and express themselves through art. This activity serves as a playful yet profound way to develop their artistic skills, offering a fun, tactile way to celebrate the festive season.

Egg Music: Exploring Sounds and Rhythms

Transform the joy of Easter into a musical celebration with "Egg Music." Together, fill a large plastic Easter egg with rice to create a simple yet effective homemade shaker. This engaging activity is more than just crafting an instrument; it's an invitation to explore sound, rhythm, and movement. As you and your child shake to the beat, create music, dance, and sing along to your favorite songs, you're not only having fun but also fostering a deep connection with music. Participating in group music activities allows children to feel the unity and joy of creating sounds together, enhancing their social skills and musical understanding in a joyful, participatory setting.

Expressing Feelings Through Art

Art offers a powerful medium for children to express their feelings, and the act of egg decorating provides a unique opportunity for emotional expression. As children choose colors and designs for their eggs, encourage them to think about the emotions these choices represent. This process helps them understand and communicate their feelings in a non-verbal way, offering insights into their inner world. Through the simple act of painting eggs, children learn to channel their emotions into creative expression, developing emotional intelligence alongside their artistic skills. It's a gentle way to encourage them to explore and express their feelings, using art as a bridge to understanding themselves and the world around them.

The Joy of Egg Exchange: Fostering Community Spirit

Engage in a heartwarming "Egg Exchange" event, a simple yet profound activity designed to nurture the seeds of community spirit among 1 - 2-year-olds. This gathering, centered around the exchange of Easter eggs decorated with care and creativity by the little ones, serves as a beautiful introduction to the joys of giving and receiving. As each child presents their uniquely painted egg to a friend, they embark on a journey of understanding the value of generosity, connection, and belonging. This exchange is not just about the eggs; it's a celebration of friendship and the communal joy that comes from sharing a piece of their artwork, fostering a sense of pride in collective achievements and a deeper connection with their peers.

Understanding Giving and Receiving

The act of giving their decorated egg to a friend is a powerful moment for young children, rich with emotional and social learning opportunities. This experience allows them to explore the feelings associated with giving and the joy of making someone else happy. Through this exchange, they start to grasp the deeper significance of generosity and empathy, laying the groundwork for a lifelong understanding of the importance of caring for others. As they witness the happiness their gift brings to a friend, children learn the invaluable lesson that sometimes the greatest joy comes not from receiving, but from giving.

Collaborating on a Community Easter Mural

Unleash creativity and collaboration through the creation of a "Community Easter Mural," a large-scale art project that brings together the individual talents of young children for a collective masterpiece. Using handprints, stamps, or other imaginative techniques, each child contributes to a vibrant Easter-themed mural, symbolising unity and collective creativity. This activity is a wonderful way to explore the concept of cooperation and the beauty of creating something together. As they see their individual contributions come together in a stunning display, children learn to appreciate the value of teamwork and the shared pride in what they can achieve as a community.

Thank you for reading to the end!

The Practical Guide To Supporting Your Child's Development With AI

As parents, our greatest desire is to see our children thrive, especially in their educational journeys. This often means taking an active role in supporting their learning, particularly in areas like communication and language skills. During my time as a teacher, I encountered many parents of bilingual and trilingual students concerned about their child's language development, wondering if their child was facing a delay or, more worrisomely, a deficit.
