Easing Food Crisis and Promoting Long-Term Food Security in Asia and the Pacific

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) announced plans to provide at least $14 billion over 2022–2025 to ease the worsening food crisis in Asia and the Pacific and improve long-term food security by strengthening food systems against the impacts of climate change and biodiversity loss. The assistance expands ADB’s already significant support for food security in the region, where nearly 1.1 billion people lack healthy diets due to poverty and food prices which have soared to record highs this year.

Managing Asia's Energy Transition

Asia and the Pacific are responsible for around 80% of global coal consumption and more than 50% of CO2 emissions. The devastating consequences of climate change are increasingly plain to see: floods, droughts, heat waves, and storms afflict countries across the region. A successful transition to low-carbon power will be critical to meeting emission reduction goals under the Paris Agreement. But a new set of challenges could derail targets: post-pandemic budgets are strained, inflation could affect investment, and supply chains are being rethought.

By the Numbers: Inflation and Food and Energy Prices

Inflation in developing Asia is on the rise. The average inflation rate in the region increased to 5.3% in July from 3.0% in January. Even so, price pressures in developing Asia remain more moderate than in advanced economies, including the US and the euro area, and most emerging economies. Rising global food and energy prices contributed to the increase in inflation throughout the region.

Hi All concerned at ADB, Good to hear that ADB plans plans to provide at least $14 billion over 2022–2025 to ease the worsening food crisis in Asia and the Pacific and improve long-term food security by strengthening food systems against the impacts of climate change and biodiversity loss. It's a god thing in this crucial time. But there is another issue, which needs to be addressed by ADB and all other donors, which is "Corruption". Corruption in Asia and Africa is at very high level. ADB, USAID, EU, AfDB, WB and all other big donors in the world prefers to work through Government. But problem is if you can't stop the corruption in all concerned countries than your efforts will be null and void. 50% aid will go to limbo. Concerning this issue, please look at the "corruption" scenario in all the concerned countries. You will get the real picture. Before giving the money to the Government, discuss with them about the corruption situation first and ask them how they are going to minimize the corruption in their countries to receive the funding for food security and climate change. Ask the concerned Governments to submit a strategy on minimizing the corruption. So that your Aid will be effective.

ADB one of the main reasons for food crisis is access to high quality seed of good varieties that are climate resilient. However you wont fund breeding as that is research. Unless good high seed yielding varieties are developed, cost of certified seed wont come down. Farmers cant get high germination high quality seed. Breeding is not fundamental research. It is variety development so that a new product can reach farmers. Unless you fund and support breeding, networks that distribute high quality seed for good seed production, cost of food will go up and profits for farmers will go down. New solutions to problems should be carried in seeds
