"To win more negotiations, be strategic, and master the success factors that lead to better outcomes." -Greg Williams, The Master Negotiator & Body Language Expert
?
You wonder how to win this negotiation as you sit across the table from your biggest client. As beads of sweat form on your forehead, you think this negotiation will determine the future of your business. You know that a blend of persuasive tactics, keen observation of body language, and cultural understanding will make all the difference, and you have mastered those skills. With that, you smiled and began negotiating.
When was the last time you encountered a stressful negotiation requiring skillful use of strategies? How did you fare? Would you like to know how you can do better in the future? This article offers eight insights to accomplish that.?
?
1. Employing Persuasive Tactics and Strategies
?
To excel in negotiation, employing persuasive tactics and strategies is essential. Mastering rhetoric, appealing to logic and emotions, and creating a compelling argument can shift the scales in your favor.
Storytelling is another way to illustrate points vividly. Employ them by using data and facts to support arguments to enhance your position and address the other party's concerns.
?
2. Identifying and Responding to Negotiation Tactics
?
Sometimes, negotiations are laden with tactics designed to gain leverage. Recognizing these tactics can help you respond effectively. Common tactics include the "good cop, bad cop" routine, where one party is reasonable while another is demanding. Another is the "decoy," distracting you with one issue while adeptly shrouding the main one. Being aware of these helps you stay focused and prepared to counteract swiftly.
?
3. Using Body Language to Gain an Advantage
?
Body language plays a critical role in negotiations. It, and the non-verbal cues emitted through eye contact, posture, gestures, and facial expressions, convey confidence, openness, honesty, or conversely, discomfort and dishonesty. Mirroring the other party's body language can also build rapport, while being attentive to their non-verbal signals can offer insights into their unspoken thoughts and feelings.
?
4. Become Sensitized to Cultural Differences
?
In a globalized world, recognizing and addressing cultural differences is vital. Values, contexts, and communication norms influence each culture's negotiation style. For instance, while Western cultures may prioritize directness and individualism, Eastern cultures often value harmony and collectivism. Demonstrating cultural sensitivity by understanding and respecting these nuances can foster trust and smoother negotiations.
?
5. Anchoring, Framing, and Other Negotiation Tactics
?
·?????? Anchoring creates initial points around which negotiations revolve. If your negotiation skills are superior to the opposition, consider if you will set it or allow them to do so.
?
·?????? Framing is how negotiators present information to emphasize its positive or negative aspects.
?
·?????? Having insight into the opposition's propensity for loss aversion, where people seek to avoid losses over acquiring gains, can also be leveraged to create urgency and motivation.
?
6. Concession Strategies
?
Effective concession strategies can be pivotal in negotiations. Negotiators should not make concessions without receiving something in return; treat them as valuable assets to exchange. Start with more minor concessions to build goodwill and move to larger ones strategically. Getting something in return for your concessions ensures the negotiation remains a balanced give-and-take process.
?
7. Maintaining Composure and Emotional Intelligence
?
Most negotiations are emotionally charged, making emotional intelligence (EQ) and composure critical for success. Recognize your emotions and those of others. When challenged, stay calm, listen actively, and respond thoughtfully rather than reacting impulsively. High EQ entails empathy, self-awareness, self-regulation, and social skills - all of which help tactfully navigate challenging conversations and conflicts.
?
8. Negotiation Call-to-Action Tips
?
1. Create a Compelling Case - Before your next negotiation, list the key points of your argument. Support each point with data, examples, or stories highlighting your position. Practice delivering them compellingly.
?
2. Be Prepared - Familiarize yourself with common negotiation tactics, such as those mentioned. Keep a list handy and review it before entering a negotiation. This preparation will enable you to recognize tactics as they occur.
?
3. Observe Your Body Language – Heighten your ability to read body language. Before entering negotiations, video-record yourself during a mock session to observe the gestures you emit. Match them based on how you wish the opposition to perceive you.
?
4. Do Cultural Homework - Research the cultural backgrounds of those you will negotiate with. Study their negotiation style and etiquette to demonstrate respect and sensitivity.
?
5. Anchoring – Be mindful of the impact setting anchors have on negotiations. If you are more skillful than your opponent, consider if you will let them set the anchor first. That will momentarily infuse them with a false sense of control.
?
6. Plan Concessions - Identify potential concessions you can make before entering a negotiation, and anticipate how the other negotiator might respond. Decide which ones you can offer early and which you should save for later usage.
?
7. Practice Emotional Control – Practice controlling your emotions by simulating challenging situations that might trigger you during the talks. Reflect on your past negotiations to identify triggers that did not emotionally serve you. You will become better prepared to address them if they happen again.
?
Reflection
?
You can easily win negotiations faster. To do so, employ persuasion techniques, recognize and respond to tactics, leverage body language, understand cultural differences, use anchoring and framing effectively, employ strategic concessions, and maintain emotional intelligence. All are vital components of successful negotiations.
Mastering those elements will make you a better negotiator and empower you to approach negotiations more confidently and with greater poise. And everything will be right with the world.
?
Remember, you're always negotiating!

2 个月The EQ component is so important! Without a strong EQ you can both overreact and underreact. I used to struggle with being "too nice" almost as if I wanted the person I was negotiating with to become my friend. Let's just say, I learned my lesson after getting bulldozed a few times!
