Easily Improve ESD Impact While Moving South Africa Towards Lower Unemployment

Millions are spent on enterprise supplier development (ESD) and enterprise development (ED) in South Africa, with some programmes delivering significant impact, and we can do more if we can do it at scale. Most programmes have only a few businesses (10 to 100) that they develop at a time, usually for 6 to 12 months. That will not address the ticking time bomb of unemployment on which South Africa currently sits.?

We could improve the success and impact of ESD and ED programmes while reducing their risk and cost, creating thousands of jobs in the process and doing it at scale (100’s and even 1,000’s of businesses per month).?

What needs to change

We could increase the throughput of these programmes mentioned above if we can provide a steady stream of entrepreneurs who have already shown that they can do the work and are already making money. It would mean another programme would have to run higher up the value chain. A programme that is quick and cost-effective in developing entrepreneurs and creating businesses.

Luckily, there exists such a programme.?

Created in Africa for Africa and proven in Africa

At The Human Entrepreneur, we help unemployed people start a business without providing ANY external funding. In just 5 weeks, these newly-minted entrepreneurs make enough money to sustain themselves financially. We CAN create entrepreneurs and jobs in 5 weeks or less, which is essential because people are hungry now.

Scale

With our current training capacity, we can create 500 businesses monthly and scale that to 1,000 in 30 to 60 days. Over 6 months, we could expand to 10,000 businesses monthly.

Benefits to ESD and ED programmes and South Africa?

1. Thousands of new jobs per month

When we help a person become an entrepreneur and start a business, we help them to create a job for themselves. Creating hundreds or even thousands of new businesses monthly will mean equal or more jobs.

2. Less development risk for ESD and ED programmes

Existing development programmes that is upstream from our programme do not have to bet on an unknown horse. They have a steady supply of entrepreneurs who have proven they can do the work, reducing the chances of programme drop-off. Having less programme-drop off means saving a lot of money, which can be used to develop more entrepreneurs.

3. Reduced cost | time for ESD and ED programmes

Existing programmes fed by our rapid programme will now work with profitable businesses that need added expertise in systems and management to grow. That means a year-long programme can be shortened.? Shaving months off these programmes will result in significant cost savings while delivering impact in a shorter time.

4. Energising the ecosystem

Feeding thousands of growth-ready entrepreneurs into existing ED and ESD programmes will energise the whole entrepreneurial development ecosystem and speed up entrepreneurial development, job creation, and economic growth.?

Conclusion

We have the right tools right here, right now, to meaningfully solve South Africa’s unemployment crisis while rapidly increasing the impact that ESD and ED programmes can have. All that we have to do is work together.?
