EASE invites feedback on draft recommendations for AI use in scholarly communication

The European Association of Science Editors (EASE) Peer Review Committee has announced an open call for comments and suggestions on their draft recommendations for the use of AI in scholarly communication. This follows the recent launch of the Peer Review Quality Assessment page in June.

The draft, titled "Recommendations on Use of AI in Scholarly Communication," addresses the rapid development of Large Language Models (LLMs) and Generative AI (GenAI) and their implications for scholarly communication. As AI technology evolves, it presents both challenges and opportunities, leading to diverse policies among journals, publishers, and funders regarding AI tool usage. Recent research indicates that many researchers are already leveraging AI for manuscript creation, editing, and peer review, despite uncertainties about AI accuracy, effectiveness, and reproducibility.

The toolkit aims to promote the responsible and transparent use of AI by editors, authors, and reviewers, providing links to current policies and practices. The EASE Peer Review Committee (PRC) will monitor and update these recommendations as new information and advancements emerge.

EASE members and the broader academic community are invited to review the draft recommendations and provide feedback using the feedback form, available until September 15, 2024. Responses can be submitted anonymously.

Mario Malicki, Chair of the PRC, encourages members to engage in discussion about the document on the EASE Forum, under the post created by him. He suggests reading the document and sharing any questions in the forum before submitting the feedback form.
