Ease of Doing Business in Nigeria: A Selective Responsibility?

Ease of doing business in Nigeria seems to be made the responsibility of a selective few – the government. Sometimes it is conveyed as though it is only meant for attracting foreign investors, gaining some leverage in the World Bank’s ranking or for international image management. Little seems to be said about ease of doing business among ourselves, with ourselves, as a people, a society and a country.
The Foreign Investor will come and go. We see it every now and again. Projects are closed and they go back to their base. The economy is harsh and they close shop. Our people - the local employees lose jobs, income and sustenance; and are thrown back to the labour market. The country loses. The foreign investor counts their lost. And the signal that gives whether we like it or not is – ‘Nigeria is a not a good place for business’. The next person planning entry into the Nigerian market will have a rethink. With all our vast and untapped opportunities, this should not be.
· How easy is it for people to deal with your organisation?
· As a company owner or head of organisation, how easy is it to deal with you?
· How easy is it for the public to deal with your employees when doing business with your organisation?
· Do you have processes, norms, standard operating procedure which your team must follow and which your suppliers, vendors, service providers are informed?
Or is everyone a ‘god’ in their respective desk, making it hard to pass files, get feedback and obtain approvals. “Come back tomorrow”…… and tomorrow never ends”
Ease of doing business is the responsibility of all of us, whether as an employee or employer in a private company, public company, public service or government institution.
We are the ones to make it attractive for people to do business with Nigeria and in Nigeria irrespective of our status or position (junior, middle or top level) in the organisation we represent; and irrespective of the size of the organisation, industry or sector we play.
Charity they say begins at home, we can begin with making it easy to do business between and among ourselves whether in private or public organisations?
