An earthquake in Tibet
Last Tuesday, Jan. 7, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck Dingri county of the mountainous Shigatse prefecture in the Tibet Autonomous Region, leaving at least 126 dead and 188 more injured. Tremors were felt in neighboring India, Nepal, Bhutan and even in Bangladesh.?
By Wednesday, Jan. 8, the focus of relief efforts shifted from search and rescue to resettlement, but sources in the region told RFA on Thursday that local Tibetans are still conducting rescue efforts.
Sources also told RFA that they estimate the actual number of people impacted to be higher than the ones cited by Chinese authorities.RFA Tibetan has been working closely with local sources to get the most up-to-date information. Tibetans have been restricted from sharing information about the disaster outside of the region. According to Maya Wang, associate China director at Human Rights Watch, this is in line with China’s past track record of trying to censor information in the wake of natural disasters, like with COVID-19 or the Sichuan earthquake.
A spokesperson from the Central Tibetan Administration has also urged transparency, calling on China to disclose the actual impact of the earthquake, citing the lack of updates to the number of casualties.
