Earth Stand Still
Apologies for the spacing. This format double-spaces poetry, but Christmas is for sharing, so I hope you find inspiration from one of the most profound camera angles on the Christmas story–the vantage point of Jewish shepherds whose lives were never the same after God chose to visit them. So many of us need a divine breakthrough just as much. If you are one of them, may you be blessed with a similar breakthrough experience this Christmas season.
Shepherds on the hillside, gazing through the night,
Suddenly surrounded by the flash of heaven’s light,
Joyful tidings breaking, echo through the hills.
Trembling herdsmen wonder as the earth stands still.
Do not be afraid! God’s peace has come to earth,
Goodwill from the Father through the Holy Infant’s birth,
David’s royal offspring, prophecy fulfilled,
Savior and Messiah! Let the earth stand still!
Hasten to the manger! Press to see your King!
He who lately clothed Himself with praises angels sing,
Now in swaddling clothes kept from the bitter chill.
Love for us compels Him. Let the earth stand still.
Savior in the manger, save our fallen souls!
Have You not in mercy come to make the broken whole?
Sovereign Son of Heaven, form us to Your will.
Heal us and we shall be healed. Our hearts stand still.?
