Earth Month: Moving Towards Regeneration with Sam’s Club?
During Earth Month, the focus is often on how we can change our habits to better benefit our planet. Whether it’s recycling more, riding your bike to work or planting trees, we are caring for this beautiful space in which we live and preserving it for future generations. I’ve been reflecting on Lee Scott’s 2005 speech that I remember him giving when I was a first-year associate, in which he calls on the individual, be it a store/club associate, manager or home office associate, to personally think about their contributions and see them as an investment in the future. While that speech may have been years ago, his aggressive vision of a company always at its best is something that we strive for every day at Sam’s Club.
15 years later, Walmart made a commitment to becoming a regenerative company . Since Lee’s speech and our commitment to regeneration, we have made progress in the regenerative space. An estimated 46% of our energy is provided by renewables (as of FYE 2023), 78% of waste was diverted from landfills or incineration (as of CYE 22) and 58% of global private-brand packaging was recyclable, reusable or industrially compostable (as of FYE 22). We are 75% of the way to achieving our Project Gigaton? goal to reduce, avoid or sequester one billion metric tons (a gigaton) of greenhouse gas emissions from the global value chain by 2030 (as of FYE 23). We’re proud of this progress but know that we must continue the work to reach our goals.
In 2022, Sam’s Club committed to making an impact in four focus areas that intersect everything we do as a business: opportunity for people, acting ethically and with integrity, embedding sustainability across our operations and sourcing and engaging with community. We are proud of the products that we have committed to be made with the member and planet in mind?.
Our goals are industry-leading and we are making strong progress toward our Member’s Mark? private brand goals by 2025. These include creating opportunities for diverse suppliers, expanding access to products and services through our community involvement and building trust with our members. By focusing on regeneration as our vision, Sam’s Club is choosing to be better and do better for both its members and the planet.
?Here are a few other ways we are holding fast to our conviction of becoming a regenerative company:?

Not only are we focused on our planet, we care about people too. Supporting our members, associates and their communities is at the core of what we do. Since FY2020, we’ve made tremendous investments in our associates. In 2021, we announced a pay increase for all of our field hourly associates, and we proudly partner with communities during our annual Sam’s Club-wide Day of Service events. And as part of our culture, we encourage associates to find local causes they feel passionate about to help create positive impact. We’re also expecting to add more than 30 new clubs over the next several years, along with adding supply chain sites to more areas – ensuring additional opportunities to engage communities.
After years of implementing changes in the various businesses on the Walmart U.S. side, I have loved learning about how we are focused at Sam’s Club in keeping member obsession top of mind and putting regeneration into our ways of working daily. I’m excited to be a part of continuing the progress that has begun and can’t wait to see the ideas and innovation that can help us progress faster to make a difference for future generations.
