April 22, 2022-Libertyville, IL-Prior to this #EarthDay2022, Global Water Works gathered #watertech experts, water advocates, engineers, and water industry professionals from five continents to share stories, raise questions, and celebrate the ways water can fuel peace, prosperity and resilience. Recordings of the April 14 virtual member collaboration are now publicly available in an #EarthDay2022 playlist in the Global Water Works YouTube.
Melissa Meeker unveiled the full capacity of The Water Tower, a new training campus she leads in the metro Atlanta area, to advance the most relevant applied research and in water use and reuse.
“We’re so data rich, but we’re not necessarily data smart,” Meeker said. To help build capacity for wise use of water data for water stewardship, The Water Tower campus includes on-site consulting and engineering firms for technical assistance alongside research and development space for water treatment technology innovators. “This is a very unique facility in that we have live water flows from an adjacent wastewater plant. So, you could tap live flows and test your treatment technologies. I only know of one other facility in the world that has this capability.”
Raj Rajaram presented a paradigm-shifting book for teens he co-wrote that introduces water recycling, and solid and liquid waste reuse, as a key element of building resilience in the age of climate disruption. Climate Change & Environment: How It Affects Us All is available in May. The book draws on Rajaram’s four decades of experience in geotechnical and environmental engineering in the Americas, Africa and India.
“Allocate water first to humans, and to the animals and land we depend on, then treat it and send out for use by agriculture and industry,” said Rajaram. He emphasized that once every drop of water used by agriculture and industry comes from water already recycled from domestic consumers’ usage, “then there’s plenty of water.”
Author and water expert Greg Chick gave an overview of the potential of micro metering offered by Droople, a new company bringing Swiss precision technology to water management.
Lively breakout sessions grappled with potential problems in public perception of micro metering of individual household devices as seeming too intrusive. Participants emphasized that both micro metering and water reuse require clear communication about their ecological and economic benefits, ideally via multiple channels to reach both adults and youth.
Experts from around the globe shared success stories of how innovative water stewardship led to prosperity and peace, from a farmer who quadrupled his soil absorption capacity to behind-the-scenes work to promote peace between Israel and Palestine through sharing technologies to generate enough clean water for both.
GlobalWaterWorks invites you to connect to explore these stories for Earth Day. See how the people, processes and #watertech are fueling our Big Blue Planet.
