Earth Day, invest in our planet ??
On April 22 we celebrate Earth Day. Just as a flower does not make it spring, one day a year does not solve the problems facing our planet. Actually it is not a day, but a movement that seeks to sensitize us all. Earth Day is an annual event to show support for protecting the environment. First held on April 22, 1970, it now includes a wide range of events coordinated globally by EARTHDAY.ORG? , reaching an estimated one billion people in more than 193 countries.?
The official theme for 2022 is Invest in our planet. This NGO reminds us that this is the time to change everything: the business climate, the political climate and to see how we take action on the climate. Now is the time for unstoppable courage to preserve and protect our health, our families and our livelihoods. They underline that we must act boldly, innovate widely and implement equitably all together; and that an alliance for the planet is essential.?
As Kathleen Rogers, president of EARTHDAY.ORG? says, “We need to build a global citizenry fluent in the concept of climate change and inspired by environmental education to act in defense of the planet”. For their part, to encourage and inspire local leaders to engage their communities in environmental activism, they have launched several toolkits to address some of the world's most pressing issues. Among them we have topics as interesting as the need to clean nature, act on the pollution generated by plastic, climate literacy, how to take care of our clothes or the conservation of bees, to name a few examples.
Although they are considered the largest environmental movement in the world, there are more players who also work in the same direction, from the United Nations with the Sustainable Development Goals , to events totally focused on this theme such as those organized by the Earth Day Initiative or others that cover it as part of reference economic forums, such as the one organized by this house Wake Up Spain! ; without forgetting hundreds of initiatives organized by private companies.?
The Earth Day Initiative is hosting a hybrid event in New York this year, reminding us of the importance of showing up for climate action and environmental justice through its call to action with dozens of environmental groups and disparate advocates like Alexandria Villase?or. or the former president of Ireland, Mary Robinson, to name two. On the other hand, I understand that we are all familiar with the SDGs, but as a reminder I will comment thatsustainable development is development capable of meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. And that, as the United Nations tells us, to achieve it is essential to harmonize three basic elements: economic growth, social inclusion and environmental protection; since these elements are interrelated and are all essential for the well-being of people and societies.
On the internet we can find many tips to celebrate Earth Day, for my part I just want to emphasize that if we do not invest in our planet, which is our home, we have little future. I am not asking you to kiss the ground we walk on, nor to beat ourselves up for not being perfect, but we are asking you to demonstrate with actions that we are aware of the importance of environmental justice, that well-being at home and in the workplace is not it must mortgage the future of no one, of the possibilities around the use of renewable energies or of the enormous challenge that implies having a sustainable diet.?
