Observance of April 22 as Earth Day since 1970 reminds us our duty towards Mother Earth. It provides a clarion call to the citizens that the time is right now to mobilize and take action to save our planet. All living things have an intrinsic value, and each plays a unique role in their complex web of life. New challenges like climate change have arisen. The demand-supply dynamics is changing. This further accentuates the global community’s task towards protecting our endangered and threatened species: bees, coral reefs etc. It becomes necessary to convert the Enthusiasm most of us feel towards protecting our planet Earth to Ambition & Action this Earth Day iterating the same reflections as the earlier April 22, 1970 gestured the themes “That uncontroversial goal- a livable world”. Lets secure the same action this Earth Day.
Since then Earth Day has now emerged as a global event that is observed each year, and broad estimates show that more than 1 billion people in 192 countries now take part in what is the largest civic-focused day of action in the world. On this auspicious day, people march, plant trees, maintain hygiene and sanitation, along with governments and business entities making pledges and announcements pertaining to sustainability measures.
If we do not act now, extinction may be humanity’s most enduring legacy.
The theme for 2019 Earth Day is “Protect our Species” and to raise awareness about the increasing rate of extinction of millions of species. Extreme decline of plant and wildlife populations is attributable to causes of species extinction driven by human activity: climate change, deforestation, habitat loss, trafficking and poaching, unsustainable agriculture, pollution and pesticides. The impacts of human-driven activity are far-reaching. Undoubtedly, every single species has its own place in the environment that contributes to the ecosystem; nevertheless, human-driven activities like hunting and other natural activities including changing patterns of environment have rendered most of the species like Amur leopard, cross river Gorilla, three toed-Sloth etc., to enlisted as endangered animals that may be lost in 21st century. The Earth Day is the solemn occasion to undertake the pledge to slow-down the rate of extinctions and recover many of our declining, threatened and endangered species by working collectively to build a united global movement of consumers, industry, business, civil society, faith leaders, and scientists to demand immediate action. We at #IndiaWaterFoundation support and endorse the call given by Earth Day Network to the people of the globe to join “Protect Our Species” campaign with the following goals:
- Educate and raise awareness about the accelerating rate of extinction of millions of species and the causes and consequences of this phenomenon.
- Achieve major policy victories that protect broad groups of species as well as individual species and their habitats.
- Build and activate a global movement that embraces nature and its values.
- Encourage individual actions such as adopting plant-based diet and stopping pesticide and herbicide use.
