Earth Day 2024: Combating plastics the Heartful way

As communities around the globe acknowledge Earth Day 2024 today, the theme "Planet vs. Plastics" challenges us to confront one of the most pervasive environmental issues of our time. Plastic pollution, a formidable enemy to our ecosystems, also casts a shadow over the travel industry where disposable products and non-recyclable materials are commonplace.

Despite the overwhelming desire among four out of five travellers to make responsible and sustainable travel choices, the challenge lies in where to find these options. Enter Heartful, an emerging platform set to revolutionise the way we can find and book sustainable and inclusive short-term accommodation both here in Australia and in New Zealand.

Building on the success of their MVP, Hosting with Heart, Heartful will continue this legacy by offering properties that are unique in charm but uniform in their commitment to sustainability. Each property featured on the Heartful platform will share its own approach to eco-friendly practices, allowing guests to actively participate in their conservation during their stay.

A wave of change: travel preferences and plastic awareness

Aligned with Earth Day's call to action, Heartful recognises the shift in travel preferences toward environmental consciousness. A recent survey indicates that one in two travellers now prioritise water conservation in their accommodation choices, and a significant majority seek out accommodations with robust waste reduction and eco-friendly amenities. Heartful is preparing to launch mid-year with properties that embody these principles, each upholding a strict no single-use plastics policy alongside features like rainwater collection, energy-efficient design and infrastructure, and locally sourced amenities. There are more than 69 property hosts previously featured on Hosting with Heart who will transition to the new platform, bringing along their proven commitment to eco-friendly hospitality. However, there are many more who are currently in the throes of adopting 'the Heartful way' and readying themselves to also list.

How to reduce plastic waste while travelling

With 79% of the plastic ever produced still lingering in landfills or contaminating the natural environment, the need for action is urgent. As travellers, we have a unique opportunity to combat this persistent pollution by making mindful choices.

  1. Begin by choosing sustainable accommodations like those soon to be featured on Heartful. Properties that not only reduce plastic usage but also promote broader sustainability practices.
  2. Carry reusable items such as water bottles, coffee cups, and shopping bags to avoid disposable plastics.
  3. Opt for meals at restaurants that use real cutlery and plates instead of takeaway containers, and choose products with minimal or biodegradable packaging.
  4. Participate in local clean-up activities if available, making your travel experience not only memorable but also beneficial to the places you visit.

The power of informed choices

Embracing the spirit of Earth Day, the potential for a more sustainable future lies within our choices today. Choosing accommodation that prioritises environmental values directly contributes to the global effort against plastic pollution and environmental degradation. With each holiday taken, an opportunity exists to enact substantial change.
