The $300 million Mordialloc Bypass will see a 9 kilometre road link from the Mornington Peninsula Freeway in Aspendale Gardens to the Dingley Bypass.
Geotechnical investigations will begin within the Waterways estate wetlands. Five 35-50 metre deep boreholes will this week be drilled at potential bridge pier locations through the wetlands which lie adjacent to the Waterways estate. The results from this will help inform the design of the overpass over Springvale Road and the Mordialloc Creek wetlands. The over water drilling will take place from a 6 x 6 metre pontoon, which will be lifted into the water by a 200 tonne crane to protect the vegetation around the banks of the wetlands.
Victorian Minister for Roads Luke Donnellan confirmed the Mordialloc Bypass would open in 2021 with the goal of easing congestion across Melbourne’s south east. The new road will improve access to the Dandenong South Employment and Innovation Cluster and industrial areas in Braeside and Moorabbin. Road users will also have improved access to residential, recreation and other activity centres in the area.
“These geotechnical investigations are an important step in the planning process before building the bypass, which will slash congestion and take trucks off local roads,” he said.
Major works will begin mid-2019 once planning approvals are granted by both the Victorian and Australian Governments, preconstruction works have been completed and the tender process has been finalised.
