Early Music Education: Turning Children into Remarkable Musicians Ahead of Their Teens

Early Music Education: Turning Children into Remarkable Musicians Ahead of Their Teens

As the 11-year-old Indian #guitarist, #MayaNelakantan, captivated audiences on America’s Got Talent and made waves in the media. Her appearance shifted many parents' perceptions about the potential for their children to excel as musicians and performers at a young age. I am also delighted to highlight one of our own students, OM, who, at just 11 years old, is performing on various platforms and has been featured on MH1 TV. This young talent demonstrates impressive finger dexterity.

Parents often struggle to commit to their child's music education, which can significantly impact their child's development in this area. A common issue is that many #parents find it challenging to prioritize music education among other activities such as #sports, language classes, #dance, and swimming. They may also overlook #music, viewing it as a long-term and difficult endeavor, but this is a critical mistake. Neglecting music means missing out on an important aspect of a child's development and forgoing the opportunity to cultivate their talent before they enter their #teenage years.

Why Music Learning Stands Out Compared to Other Activities:

- Develops both sides of the brain.

- Fosters individuality

- Enhances language skills and memory (beyond what language classes can offer).

- Provides a creative outlet (unlike more structured activities like dance or swimming).

- Offers numerous academic, physical, psychological, and social benefits.

If time is tight for both parents and children, there are several strategies to incorporate music learning into a busy schedule:

- Schedule music lessons alongside other activities—fit them into your routine and consider online lessons for flexibility.

- Encourage multitasking, such as practicing the guitar during breaks. Many of our corporate students use this approach, keeping their guitar in their office/car and taking 5-7 minute breaks for finger exercises, which they repeat 3-4 times a day.

- Follow a structured curriculum that aligns with your routine. This approach sets achievable goals and outcomes within a set timeframe.

- View music education as fun; you may be surprised at how quickly you and your child or anyone can develop new skills.

Remember, sometimes the best career plan for your child may not align with your own expectations. They might be destined to pursue something different that could greatly benefit society. Kudos to Maya and OM’s parents for their dedication, commitment, and perseverance, which have allowed their children to shine and contribute positively to the community.
