Waking up between 3: 00 AM - 5: 00 AM is associated with the energy meridian running through the lungs, and is connected with the emotion of sadness. This can be an implication of the deep unmet spiritual needs of our soul. Sometimes, in this world of fear, war, worries, sadness and luxury, we forget about the true calling of our hearts and souls. Sitting in a quiet place with no one around and listening to the gentle whispers of heart softly emerging and expressing themselves lifts our spirits and rejuvenates our soul.
Improved Concentration-This time offers a calm and peaceful environment, which is suitable to practice concentration and achieve a healthy state of mind. “The breeze at dawn has secrets to tell you. Don’t go back to sleep. You must ask for what you really want. Don’t go back to sleep.” ~ Rumi. I have got a habit of getting off my bed between 3AM to 4AM. It's that time of the day when our minds are at their calmest state.
Trust me, it’s an amazing experience, and you will not want to go back to sleep once you get into a habit of waking up at this time. It does a lot of good for me spiritually. Being a student of spirituality, I personally prefer studying at this time as my mind is clear without any worries. One hour of study at this time will help you achieve more than a 5 hour long study session at any other time of the day.
In particular, I find that morning is the best time to meditate. Almost every authority on meditation that I have ever read recommends that you practice in the pre-dawn hours. Before Sun Rise is the best time. There is no pollution, fresh air, No noise and a pure environment. Reasons to Meditate in the Morning are manifold. First, it’s helpful to meditate when the machinery of your mind hasn’t ramped up yet. When you wake up, your brain is still quiet. It may start to tick over, but if you start meditating soon after you get up, you are going to benefit from the natural quiet that comes with a good night of sleep.
Second, it’s good to focus your awareness in the morning before you do anything else. Your are going to be exercising your attention all day making choices, consuming information, bringing order to your world. You use your awareness all day to do that. Why not prime the pumps first. Meditation is to your mind what yoga or exercise is to your body.
Third, in the morning, the world is quiet. Nearly everyone is still asleep. So there is a quality of deep peace and quiet that permeates the larger field of human awareness in the early morning. I think of it like this. If all our minds together create a larger mind, that larger mind hasn’t revved up yet. I think that’s why the yogis and saints have always recommended meditating around 4am. That ensures that almost everyone around you—in your home, in your neighborhood, in your town is asleep.
Fourth, meditation is an incredibly positive way to start the day. When you start the day with meditation, it’s a statement to yourself and to the universe. It’s also a powerful expression of intention. It means that you are putting meditation first. If you do this regularly, you will continue to strengthen and build that intention.
Fifth, there is nothing like starting your day with an experience of pure awareness. Even better than a great cup of coffee, meditation can bring clarity, lightness, and deep ease. When you enter the day having bathed in the bright light of meditation, you feel free. It’s amazing what this can do for your outlook on the world. In time, meditation is like a perfume that infuses your experience and your perspective all day. What’s the smell of that perfume? It’s one of pure positivity. You know that life is good, no matter the daily dramas, and that gives you confidence all day. Cheers!
