Lever Group Visit-April 4, 2024

Early High School, High School, Early College, College Completion & AP Capstone

President Obama praised Medgar Evers College Preparatory High School in his speech at the 2009 NAACP convention.

We also have to explore innovative approaches such as those being pursued here in New York City; innovations like Bard High School Early College and Medgar Evers College Preparatory School that are challenging students to complete high school and earn a free associate's degree or college credit in just four years.?

This recognition highlights the school's commitment to providing quality education to its students, particularly those from underserved communities. Fifteen years after President Obama's highlight we still have not found ways to replicate the equity in action at Medgar Evers College Preparatory School.

Dr. Michael A. Wiltshire is the principal of Medgar Evers College Preparatory School and I visited him in the very early stages of my leadership at Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-TECH) for his guidance. Dr. Wiltshire and I are both graduates of Historical Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Dr. Wiltshire is a graduate of Howard University and I am a graduate of Morehouse College. President Obama praised P-TECH in the 2013 State of the Union Address and visited on October 25, 2013.

Let’s also make sure that a high school diploma puts our kids on a path to a good job. ?Right now, countries like Germany focus on graduating their high school students with the equivalent of a technical degree from one of our community colleges. ?So those German kids, they're ready for a job when they graduate high school. ?They've been trained for the jobs that are there. ?Now at schools like P-Tech in Brooklyn, a collaboration between New York Public Schools and City University of New York and IBM, students will graduate with a high school diploma and an associate's degree in computers or engineering. ?We need to give every American student opportunities like this.

Dr. Wiltshire and I are leading early college schools in District 17 of New York City with majority Black students and we have been it for more than a decade. In 2015 we were among leaders identified as innovators in urban education and invited to participate in a panel discussion at Nazareth College. Dr. Wiltshire had graduates of Medgar Evers College Preparatory School attend Nazareth College. Leaders of Urban Education Discuss Innovation at Nazareth College also included David C. Banks who is now the Chancellor of New York City Public Schools.

Dr. Wiltshire and I are involved in principal professional development through the CUNY Urban Assembly Network lead by Superintendent Fred Walsh. Dr. Buffie Whitfield of Walsh's team has lead our lever group sessions. This professional development has allowed for visits to other principal's schools to discuss problems of practice. In the Fall of 2023 we visited the career and technical education (CTE) school, Academy of Hospitality and Tourism (AOHT) lead by Dr. Shirley Miller. Dr. Miller was an assistant principal at Science Technology and Research Early College High School at Erasmus (STAR) before becoming principal of AOHT. AOHT should be an early college and/or P-TECH model. STAR's principal last year was Dr. Eric Blake who became a Superintendent and one of his assistant principals Daniel Holmes became the principal.

The second visit was to Business Technology Early College High School (B-TECH) lead by Patrice Henry. Patrice Henry was an assistant principal of York Early College before becoming a P-TECH principal. The third visit was to York Early College Academy now lead by Deborah Krempa. At the beginning of school year 2023, Dr. Noah Angeles was the principal of York Early College before being promoted to Superintendent of New Visions for Public Schools . Thursday, April 4, 2024, Dr. Wiltshire hosted the fourth and final lever group visit for this school year. Medgar Evers College Preparatory School includes grades 6-12 with majority Black students. The 6-12 allows for early high school, high school, early college, college completion, and Advanced Placement Capstones. The access to rigor advanced placement and early college to majority Black students in Central Brooklyn is something that MUST be scaled. The recognition of this school by the former President Barack Obama underscores the importance of education in empowering students and creating opportunities for success. There are some students who have opportunities to take and pass the New York State's physics regents in examination in eighth grade.
