Most people don't know this about me, but cannabis is actually what got me into investment banking! I didn't have the luxury of going to an Ivy League school. I didn't land the analyst job out of college. Instead, I found investment banking because I had a passion for entrepreneurship. While working with some large cannabis companies/funds in Michigan, Nevada, and Colorado, I unknowingly found myself doing the core duties of an investment banker; due diligence, business planning, market research, investor/client relations, deal structuring, risk management, financial modeling, etc. Due to the hyper-entrepreneurial nature of cannabis industry, the overwhelming regulations, high risk, and the intense capital needs, you truly need to be a business professional to effectively raise capital and build a successful team. Are you organized? Have you thought about every financial aspect of your business? Can you tell a story? Is your business plan sound? Do you have the proper network? Can you give investors confidence? The lessons I learned in this industry transfer well to the investment banking world. No matter the industry, only solid deals get done. There's no such thing as a free lunch. If you want to raise capital, you must be more prepared than your competitors!

Thanks, Benzinga, for sharing some of the highlights of my keynote with Charlie Bachtell of Cresco Labs at Benzinga's Cannabis Capital Conference in Chicago. "It's not just the year of the core; now it's just who we are..." is one of my favorite lines from Charlie, and this sentiment permeates the industry. Most operators have made meaningful SG&A cuts and become leaner out of necessity. With some cooperation from Florida and other potential new states, the leaner operations may be paired with opportunities for revenue expansion and removing 280E, which would enhance profits and drive much-needed cash flow. Leaner operators are an underappreciated benefit of the pain we've endured the past 1,349 days since MSOS peaked on February 10th, 2021.
