Ear Muff Cleaning and Maintenance

After a long and very warm summer, now is a good time to make sure your hearing protection is being kept clean and well-maintained. Often ear muffs are not cleaned as frequently as required which can lead to poor hygiene and contamination as well as reduced hearing protection performance.

Ear muffs can be cleaned by using mild soap and water, and dried with a soft cloth. Never use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, and do not immerse in water.

Inspect the ear muff to ensure there are no cracks and no visible damage. The ear muff cushion should still be pliable and show no signs of cracking or damage. Check to see if the foam inserts are damaged or soiled. If there is any damage to the ear muff cushion or foam insert, it is time to replace these parts with the manufacturer’s ear muff hygiene kit. Make sure to refer to your manufacturer’s cleaning and maintenance instructions on how to do this.
