EAD Application Mistakes I Made (So You Don’t Have To)

I recently went through a stressful experience that I want to share to help others avoid the same mistakes. If you're in the process of getting your Employment Authorization Document (EAD), learn from my journey.

Mistake #1: Not regularly checking my USCIS portal. I had received my EAD approval notice, but since I hadn't yet received the card, I assumed everything was fine. I didn’t check the status, and by the time I did, it had already been dispatched.

Mistake #2: Using a temporary address. When I realized my EAD was sent, it was already delivered to my old address. Lesson learned: Always use a permanent address or one you can access reliably to avoid this kind of stress!

Mistake #3: Not setting up USPS informed delivery. I could have signed up for USPS informed delivery, which provides updates on incoming mail and packages. This would have helped me track my EAD card delivery status in real-time.

Mistake #4: Not opting for expedited processing when necessary. If your situation is time-sensitive, consider requesting expedited processing. I didn’t realize I could ask for it, and that could have saved me a lot of stress.

Mistake #5: Relying on email or paper mail updates only. I assumed that I would receive an email or paper notice about my card shipment in time. However, it’s crucial to actively check both the USCIS and USPS portals to stay ahead.

Mistake #6: Delaying address updates after moving. While I eventually realized my EAD was going to my old address, I should have updated my address with USCIS the moment I moved. Make sure you submit an address change immediately, even if you think your mail forwarding service will catch it!

While everything is now sorted out, I wish I had been more vigilant during the process. If you're going through this, please:

  • Regularly check your USCIS portal for updates.
  • Make sure your mailing address is permanent or long-term.
  • Set up USPS informed delivery for real-time tracking.

Mistakes happen, but they don't have to! Feel free to connect if you’ve experienced similar challenges or have questions. #EAD #USCIS #VisaJourney #LessonsLearned
