How are you using data to improve your energy efficiency?

As we head towards winter, our attention will inevitably focus even more on energy efficiency…and how to bear down on gas and electricity costs. Industrial and commercial (I&C) organisations also face significant cost pressures for energy, so we asked David Sing , Managing Director, Energy Assets Metering & Data, for his advice on driving efficiencies.

"I would urge all businesses and public sector organisations to take a fundamental look at how they are monitoring and reporting their energy usage.

For me, at a basic level, this means focusing on energy metering, consumption monitoring and setting up automatic alerts for unusual spikes in usage. At another, it means investigating advanced technologies, such as machine learning and artificial intelligence that can help to drive out waste. In practical terms, this means:

?????Ensuring that half hourly consumption data is captured in granular detail via?automated meter reading?systems.

?????Monitoring and analysing consumption data through an advanced AM&T portal, such as?WebAnalyser, for sophisticated analytics down to individual meters with automated alerts to spot and address unusual usage spikes quickly.

???Investigating how new generation digital tools such as?AMR DNA?can apply machine learning and artificial intelligence to progressively learn what best performance looks like."

Nurturing a work-life balance for a more inclusive workforce

We all know a healthy work-life balance is vital, and Energy Asset's takes a flexible approach wherever we can to support it.

Hybrid working is now routine for many businesses, including ours. But it doesn’t come without challenge. Firstly, not everyone in utilities can split their time between home and office, field-based colleagues for example. For others, the pandemic proved how much many of us rely on face-to-face human interaction. We’re sociable animals after all. However, there’s a wider industry consideration for engendering a positive work-life balance.

Sam Wright , our ESG Director, talks about how as an industry we need to become better at communicating the great careers options we can offer to women and other under-represented groups – and demonstrate we can provide a flexible, welcoming environment that fits work and family requirements.

In summary, our industry, as well as those beyond it, needs to view work/life balance not as a ‘nice-to-have’, but as a fundamental pre-requisite for ongoing business success.

DINO – future-proofing constrained local energy networks

As COP27 closes, the spotlight falls on progress linked to renewables, smart grids, energy efficiency and energy storage. At Energy Assets, we’re working with a range of partners on innovations that can enhance local electricity network resilience and capacity, while supporting the integration of renewables in newbuild housing developments.

We’ve been supporting a government-funded project demonstrating how innovative load management technology can help meet projected demand for power from heat pumps and EV charging in newbuild housing developments.

The study proved how the DINO cloud platform could successfully communicate with electrical network assets, as well as EVs, batteries and heat pumps, to balance supply with demand without the need for costly reinforcement.

Symon Gray , Head of Electricity Networks at Energy Assets, was involved in the project and says; "If we’re to avoid costly reinforcement – or risk supply curtailment or blackouts – we need to be able to balance networks successfully as demand for electricity grows. Partnering with Evergreen on this important modelling exercise enabled us to use real world data from an existing housing development in Scotland to predict the impact of heat pumps, EV charging and other low carbon technologies, such as domestic batteries, on capacity.

Critically, it shows that we’ve got the technology to manage even constrained networks in an increasingly electrified housing environment."

Introducing the EA Charity Panel

Sam Wright , ESG Director, has also introduced the EA Charity Panel to our business:

"In September we launched our?Focused on the future?initiative, to minimise the environmental impact of our operations, ensure they’re well governed and maximise the positive social impact we can make.

As one of our first?Focused on the future?activities, we invited colleagues to nominate initiatives local to each of our offices across the UK who would benefit from our support."

We’re delighted to now confirm that we are supporting five charities, chosen by our employees, for the EA Charity Panel.
