Hey designers, I trust you’re having a great Christmas season. This time of the year usually has a lot of work in it, especially as brands are working to set up their visuals for the Christmas season or the New Year. As you work on those cool graphics, also find time to rest and have a great holiday.
Today I’ll like to share a unique part of my logo design process. I designed my first ever logo in 2019 and looking back, I’ve seen how my logo design process has improved since then. Here’s a quick shot of the first logo I designed.
I really wanted to create new concepts and be more creative, so I decided to head to YouTube and find out more about logo design. I found out a common thing in the videos I found which was sketching.
I saw that I never did any form of doodling to generate ideas but rather, I would head straight to my computer to create something on Illustrator.
Sketching is really great and should come after doing some research on the brand you’re working on, its target market and its competitors. But how you sketch is also important. When you start sketching, you’ll notice that your mind easily gets fixed on a particular idea all too quickly.
While this might be a good concept, you might rob yourself of creating something unique. This is because the first idea you think of has probably been created by another person or brand. You need to make sure that you spend some time doodling, sketching, just creating things from your imagination and research. Here’s the approach I use during my sketching phase
1. Sketch 30 logos in 30 mins
2. Take a 5 min break
3. Repeat step 1 and 2 about two to three times
I like to sketch in this short amount of time (about 1 logo sketch per minute). This helps me remove all the bad ideas in my head and hopefully, produce some good ones. Don’t worry if your sketch does not look good, they’re supposed to look that way but eventually, we’ll refine them.
At the end of this, I would have like 80–90 logos and I would pick 3 to 5 which really appeal to the project brief. I would go ahead to refine the ones I’ve selected and see how to make them better, simpler and appealing.
Doing this has helped me create better logos that stand out from my client’s competition and are unique as well.
If you’re not doing this already, I suggest you get a sketch book, a couple of pencils and start sketching before moving to the computer. This will definitely help you create better logos and also save you time while working in Illustrator.
I recently made a compilation of my best logos from 2019 to 2022 on Behance, have a look?here
These are some links to videos which I found to be helpful in my logo design sketching process
Thanks for reading and have a wonderful Christmas ??
