E-Waste: A Deep Dive Into A Rapidly Escalating Crisis

We talk a lot about reducing e-waste, but are you truly aware of the extent of the problem, and the impact that your old and outdated electronic devices can have on the environment? Most people aren’t, and that’s why I decided that it's time to do a deep dive on this rapidly growing problem that many people don't even know exists.

What Exactly Is E-Waste?

E-waste, or electronic waste, refers to discarded electronic devices like smartphones, laptops and network kit. These devices contain harmful chemicals and heavy metals that can cause severe environmental damage. When not disposed of properly, e-waste often ends up in landfills or incinerators, releasing those toxins into the air and water.

The issue is widespread, and it’s only getting worse. Since data was first collected in 2014, up until the end of 2022, an estimated total of 420.3 million metric tonnes of e-waste were produced. The annual figure increases year on year, and is expected to be over 74 million metric tonnes per year by 2030.?

And the biggest culprits may not be those that come to mind first - while China, India and the USA produce the most e-waste in real terms, the size and population of these countries is an undeniable factor. Last year, it was in fact Norway that produced the most e-waste per person, followed closely by the UK.

Why Is E-Waste So Dangerous?

The dangers of e-waste are not something to be taken lightly.?

Toxic chemicals in these electronics, such as lead, mercury, cadmium, and flame retardants, can contaminate the soil where food is grown and the water we drink. This can and will lead to serious health issues like birth defects, cancer, and brain damage.?

Burning e-waste can also be dangerous - it releases harmful dioxins and furans into the air, causing respiratory problems and other health issues.

Another problem with e-waste is that it is often illegally shipped to developing countries, where unregulated recycling practices can cause even more damage to the environment and human health.?

This has led to the creation of toxic e-waste dump sites in countries like Ghana, China, and India, where workers are often exposed to dangerous chemicals and are not provided with proper protective equipment.

How Can You Help?

So, what can be done to combat e-waste and its harmful effects? The good news is that there are steps you can take today to reduce your own impact.?

One solution is to properly dispose of electronic devices through certified e-waste recycling programs. These programs ensure that toxic materials are safely extracted and disposed of, while valuable materials like copper, gold, and silver are recovered and reused.

And, of course, another smart solution is to support the refurbishment and resale of used electronics. Refurbished devices are a great alternative to buying new devices and can help reduce e-waste.

These devices are often sold at a lower price point and can function just as well as a brand-new device. Plus, when you purchase a refurbished device, you are contributing to a circular economy and reducing the demand for new electronics.

How Does Go Communications Help?

By properly disposing of electronic devices through certified e-waste recycling programs and supporting the refurbishment and resale of used electronics, we can help reduce the harmful impact of e-waste on our environment and communities.?
