The "E" in Leadership: Engagement & Education Secretaries

As Schools Director, I recognise that engagement is the backbone of effective education leadership. Education Secretaries (ESs) are the primary link between policy and school-level execution, making their role critical to improving learning outcomes across the 1,017 public primary schools I oversee.

Leveraging Engagement for Systemic Impact

Our approach to engagement with ESs is data-driven and solutions-oriented. We ensure that every school receives the support needed for effective lesson delivery, teacher management, and school leadership.

Leveraging Monthly ES Meetings Rather than imposing additional meetings, we strategically engage ESs during their standing monthly meetings to:

v Present school KPI performance reports, ensuring data-driven decision-making.

v Solicit support in resolving system-wide challenges, such as staffing gaps and teacher deployment.

v Empower ESs to drive school-level improvements, equipping them with the right insights and tools to support headteachers.

Strategic Norming Retreats

To ensure alignment on methodology and execution, we host structured retreats focused on:

?? Best practices in school supervision—helping ESs provide better oversight and coaching to school leaders.

?? ?Policy execution strategies—ensuring seamless implementation of education reforms.

?? Leadership development, reinforcing their role in driving teacher effectiveness and pupil success.

Why This Matters

Engagement with Education Secretaries ensures:

?? More effective school leadership—better support for teachers and headteachers.

?? Increased accountability—ensuring policies are implemented with fidelity.

?? Data-backed interventions—using performance metrics to prioritize and resolve challenges proactively.

Measurable Results

? Improved school oversight, leading to stronger classroom instruction.

? Faster resolution of systemic issues, including staffing, resource allocation, and teacher support.

? Greater ownership and collaboration, ensuring policy meets practice in real-time.

Looking Ahead

Education leadership is not just about policy—it’s about aligning people, processes, and performance for sustainable impact. Next in our Leadership series: Alignment & Advancement—how we ensure that every layer of the education system moves in the same direction for maximum results.
