E-Business Suite (R12) On Oracle Cloud- Day 1 Live Session Review

Hey,

This article will help you gain a better understanding and make it easier for you to learn EBS(R12) On Cloud OCI, & get a higher paid job.

In this article, I am going to share some quick tips including Q/A and useful links on the topics that we covered in Day 1 live session.

First of all, there are 8 modules & 20+ Hands-On-Labs which are important to learn to become the EBS(R12) on Cloud Architect.

  • Module 1: EBS On Cloud Architecture
  • Module 2: OCI Concepts For Apps DBAs
  • Module 3: Networking For Cloud Apps DBAs
  • Module 4: EBS Cloud Manager & Provisioning
  • Module 5: Managing EBS CM & Cloning
  • Module 6: Migration (Lift & Shift)
  • Module 7: EBS HA & DR on OCI
  • Module 8: Project Work Experience

Out of which, in the first Live Interactive Session (Day 1) of the EBS(R12) On Oracle Cloud Training Program, we covered the Cloud ConceptsEBS(R12) on Cloud Architecture and Deployment Topologies.

So, here are some FAQ's asked during the Live session from Module 1: EBS (R12) On Cloud OCI Architecture.

>Basic EBS(R12) On Cloud Terminologies

To get started with the first Module of EBS(R12) On Cloud OCI, it is important to clarify the Cloud, OCI, and EBS Concepts. This will give us a better understanding of EBS on Cloud Services.

We started the session with the basics of Oracle Cloud, like what are the service models in Oracle Cloud, Hypervisor, etc.

Q.1 What are the Different Service Models in Oracle Cloud?

A: There are 4 types of Services models provided in the Cloud:

  1. Traditional On-Premise Approach
  2. Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)
  3. Platform as a Service (PaaS)
  4. Software as a Service (SaaS)

Q2. What is the Role of Hypervisor?

A: Hypervisor is a hardware virtualization technique that allows multiple guest O.S. to run on a single host at the same time.

There are 2 types of hypervisor:

Type 1: Native or bare metal: Runs directly on bare metal (hardware)

Type 2: Hosted: Runs on top of Host O.S. that provides virtualization

Oracle Cloud uses KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine) based Type-1 Hypervisor which is an open-source virtualization technology built into Linux.

Q3. Can We run EBS(R12) On Azure Cloud?

A: Yes, We can run EBS(R12) on Azure Cloud.

Oracle & Azure have tie-up and Interconnect options. So, EBS can be deployed using the cross-cloud interconnect between Microsoft Azure and OCI.

Q4: What are the benefits of running EBS on Oracle Cloud compared to Azure or AWS?

A: Below are the key benefits of migrating your on-premise EBS(R12) to Oracle Cloud:

  • Running Oracle Cloud products on Oracle Cloud generates the best results.
  • Cloud Manager - Automation tool for EBS only on Oracle Cloud Exadata -
  • Best option for oracle Database for mission Control Application RAC - Only supported on Oracle Cloud.
  • DBCS - Automated Database for Oracle Application Cloud @Customer
  • Cloud @Customer.

Q5: What are the EBS(R12) Deployment choices ?

A: EBS(R12) has 3 deployment options:

  1. On-Premise Traditional Infrastructure
  2. Private Cloud (Cloud @Customer)
  3. Public Cloud (Oracle Cloud Infrastructure)

Q6: What are the EBS(R12) Deployment choices on Oracle Cloud?

A: Before going to the deployment options, We will first see the architecture design for the EBS(R12) on Oracle Cloud.

Oracle EBS is a 3-tier architecture that includes –

  • Clients Tier - End users
  • Middle Tier/Application tier (in Red) - Which includes Business Logic and Services to serve user requests
  • Database tier (Green) – Which stores User data and Metadata of Oracle Applications.

On Oracle Cloud we have deployment choices for both Application & Database Tiers.

EBS Middle Tier

  • OCI Compute VM (IaaS)

EBS Database Tier

  • Oracle Compute (IaaS): OCI
  • Database Cloud Service (PaaS)
  • VM DB (Optional RAC)
  • Exadata CS (Always RAC)

Note: Autonomous Transaction Processing (Serverless), Autonomous Transaction Processing (Dedicated Deployments), & Autonomous Data Warehouse are not yet supported to run EBS(R12).

Q7: Why using EBS Cloud Manager for Oracle applications?

A: EBS Cloud Manager is one of the dedicated automation tool for Oracle Applications available only on Oracle OCI. It mainly provides automation of various day-to-day activities we do on Oracle Applications as an Apps DBA.

Here are the main features of EBS Cloud Manager which justify its importance:

  • Provisioning of Oracle applications – Simple & Complex Deployments
  • Multiple Database deployment Options – Compute, VM-DB, Exadata
  • Easy Backups
  • Fast Cloning
  • Lift & Shift – Multiple Options
  • De-commission of Instances
  • Scalability & High availability Setup
  • Latest Database Version Support (19c – Till now)

Q8: Describe the difference between IAS, Fusion Middleware?

A: IAS is abbreviation of Oracle Internet Application Server, which is an integrated packaged solution for middleware infrastructure including OC4J, Web Cache, HTTP Server, Forms& Reports, Oracle Portal, and Discoverer.

Fusion Middleware

Oracle Fusion Middleware is a collection of standards-based software products that spans a range of tools and services.

Till EBS R12.1, Oracle Application Server (IAS) was used. From Oracle EBS R12.2 onwards Application Server was replaced by Fusion Middleware 11g.

Q9: In OMCS does oracle have their staff at the client site? Or do they connect via VPN?

A: Oracle Managed Cloud Services (OMCS) helps Oracle customers quickly lower infrastructure costs and leverage the elastic capacity of Oracle Applications environments. OMCS provides complete lifecycle management of Oracle Applications environments, on top of IaaS and PaaS.

Both Customer and Oracle Team connect to Oracle cloud Data center securely using VPN options.

Q10: What is a bastion host in Oracle Cloud?

A: Bastion Host in Oracle Cloud:

A bastion host (referred to the below diagram) is a compute instance that serves as the public access or entry point for accessing a private/public network from external networks like the internet. This is one level of security we provide to our architecture. Traffic must flow through the bastion host to access the private/public network, and you can set up security mechanisms on the bastion to handle that traffic. Normally SSH access or RDP access we do it via bastion host.

Azure has Bastion host Service. To know more, check our blog on Azure Bastion Host Overview And Steps to Create here

Q11: What are the Cloud Apps DBA Roles & Responsibilities?

A. Below are the Roles and Responsibilities of Cloud Apps DBA

  • Design Architecture & Topology
  • HLD, LLD, Migration & Integration
  • Strategy
  • Configure Networks on Cloud
  • Deploy & Manage EBS Cloud Manager
  • Provision & Manage EBS Environment
