Dyslexia and Money Management
Adults living with a LD often struggle with money management and tend to rely on others to support them in their financial affairs.
Here are some ways that you can help someone you love who struggles with money management due to their LD.
Above all drop your judgement and frustration when talking money with a person who lives with a LD. It helps NO ONE!
1. Go with them when they are making a large purchase decision. People with a LD often can not understand the value of an item and often overpay.
2. Go over all financial documents with them. Data in figures are hard for a person with LD to understand and as a result they may not choose correct loan terms or cost structures.

3. Adults with a LD find mental math difficult and often can not estimate price correctly which makes budgeting difficult when shopping for groceries for example. Having a list and a set amount of money can help.
4. Withdrawing cash can be confusing for some people with an LD as they often can not connect the amount that is needed with the withdrawal. Therefore helping them set a certain amount to withdrawal or using a prepaid card can help with this.
5. Incorrect budget planning - most adults with a LD struggle with assigning money to things and services and as a result find budgeting challenging or impossible. Therefore having a spending plan that does not assign a specific amount to a purchase ie groceries but for overall spending that they have to adhere can help.
