If Lencioni’s 5 dysfunctions of a team are:
- Absence of trust—unwilling to be vulnerable within the group
- Fear of conflict—seeking artificial harmony over constructive passionate debate
- Lack of commitment—feigning buy-in for group decisions creates ambiguity throughout the organization
- Avoidance of accountability—ducking the responsibility to call peers on counterproductive behaviour which sets low standards
- Inattention to results—focusing on personal success, status and ego before team success
then the 5 keys to a functional team include:
BUILDING TRUST - Willingness to be vulnerable, to admit “I am wrong”, “I made a mistake” and “I need help” within the team setting.
MASTERING CONFLICT - Productive, ideological conflict: passionate, unfiltered debate around issues of importance to the team
ACHIEVING COMMITMENT - Comes from a combination of Buy in and Clarity. Buy-in is the achievement of honest emotional support. Clarity is the removal of assumptions and ambiguity from a situation.
FOCUSING ON RESULTS - The willingness of the team to establish, announce and track key objective measurements that keep the focus on the right priorities and team member’s willingness to consistently show commitment to these results ahead of their own needs and success.
EMBRACING ACCOUNTABILITY - The willingness of team members to remind one another when they are not living up to the performance standards of the group.
