A Commanding Resurgence: The Blueprint for a Comeback

Dysfunction to Dominance
Some organizations don’t just struggle—they lose their identity.
Leadership churns. Chaos replaces progress. Those who once believed in the mission walk away. A powerhouse becomes just another name, fading into irrelevance.
This isn’t just the story of a failing football team. It’s the fate of businesses, institutions, and movements that let dysfunction take the wheel. Talent alone can’t save an organization without strong leadership, a clear vision, and a culture of accountability.
Then, something shifts. It’s never loud. It doesn’t happen overnight. Change starts in whispers—small, unnoticed choices that signal a deeper transformation. The right people step up. Priorities realign. Momentum builds.
At first, it’s quiet. But for those paying attention, the signs of revival are there.
Turning around a losing culture isn’t just possible. With the right leadership, it’s inevitable.
Confession of a “Phin”
This article isn’t written from the perspective of a die-hard Commanders fan, nor am I jumping on the bandwagon. Instead, it’s inspired by something deeper, more profound: the underdog story.
As a lifelong fan of the Miami Dolphins—a team with a reputation just as "There's always next year" as the Commanders—I know all too well the pain and disappointment a less-than-desirable season can bring. But I also understand loyalty—the kind of loyalty that keeps you hoping, year after year, for that turnaround moment. That’s why I can’t help but connect to the larger narrative of a team clawing its way back to relevance, proving that even the most lost organizations can turn it around.
Take notes, Dolphins—maybe borrow a page (or the whole playbook) from Washington? Loyal fans everywhere would thank you.
Before we dive in, let me just say—I’m not out here winning every fantasy football league (okay, maybe I won one, but that was pure beginner’s luck—I literally chose teams based on their uniform colors. Side note: that tactic hasn’t worked since).
This perspective didn’t come from analyzing player stats or dissecting every roster move. Instead, it came from a desire to understand what truly drove their success—the insights of analysts, the stories behind the headlines, and my passion for leadership.
A Long Road to Relevance
Dysfunction had become the Washington Commanders’ defining trait.
Since their last Super Bowl win in 1991—a championship season led by Hall of Fame coach Joe Gibbs and MVP quarterback Mark Rypien—the franchise had spiraled into instability. That year, Rypien’s two-touchdown performance sealed a 37-24 victory over the Buffalo Bills, marking the team’s third Lombardi Trophy. But the dominance faded.
Over the next three decades, Washington cycled through 12 head coaches, including big names like Mike Shanahan and Ron Rivera, yet success remained elusive. Seven playoff appearances. More losing seasons than fans could stomach. From 2000 to 2020, only five winning records. Once one of the NFL’s most feared teams, the Commanders became an afterthought—plagued by controversy and mismanagement.
Then, in 2024, the narrative changed.
Under General Manager Adam Peters and Head Coach Dan Quinn, the Commanders shed their old skin. No longer defined by off-field chaos, they built a culture of accountability and resilience. The results spoke for themselves: a 12-5 record, a playoff berth, and a run to the NFC Championship game.
But beyond the wins, they reclaimed something even more valuable—RESPECT.

Playbook for Rebuilding: Insights from an Outsider, Not an Analyst
How did the Commanders flip the script?
The Commanders’ turnaround wasn’t just about game-day performance or strategic adjustments; it was rooted in a fundamental shift in leadership decisions and organizational philosophy. These lessons, drawn from their remarkable transformation, go beyond football and are transferable to any organization striving for lasting success. ?
1. Stop Chasing Quick Fixes
Play Call: "Double Reverse Commitment" – A deceptive play where early misdirection leads to a long-term gain, requiring patience and trust in execution.
For years, the Commanders treated leadership like a revolving door. New coaches, new executives, new quarterbacks—all came and went, with none staying long enough to establish a cohesive identity. This constant churn created instability and undermined any chance of long-term growth.

In 2024, they took a different approach. Instead of grasping at short-term solutions, they committed to a long-term vision, investing in leaders like General Manager Adam Peters and Head Coach Dan Quinn. These leaders brought a plan rooted in patience and execution, rather than immediate results. They were given the time and autonomy to implement this vision, and it paid off.?
In Business Terms: Stop focusing on quick fixes like frequent management changes or reactive decision-making. Instead, commit to long-term strategies and give leaders the support and time they need to deliver sustainable results.
2. Build Around the Right Leaders
Play Call: "Captain’s Sweep" – A team-focused play led by a strong leader who sets the tone for the team’s success through deliberate execution.
Talent may win individual games, but leadership is what sustains success over an entire season—or in the case of a business, an entire market cycle. For too long, the Commanders lacked the kind of leadership that transforms potential into performance. In 2024, that changed.
Players like Jayden Daniels and Zach Ertz emerged as role models, taking ownership of the locker room and setting the tone for accountability and excellence. Leadership wasn’t about titles; it was about action, attitude, and inspiring others to rise to the occasion. This cultural shift in mentality was evident both on and off the field, creating a ripple effect that elevated the entire team.
In Business Terms: Leadership isn’t confined to positions of authority. Build a culture where leaders at every level set the tone, foster accountability, and inspire excellence. Empower individuals to take ownership, and the collective will follow.
3. Align Every Decision with a Core Identity
Play Call: "Foundation Blitz" – A bold defensive play where every move aligns with the core goal: staying disciplined and focused on the bigger picture.
For years, the Commanders seemed adrift, lacking a clear sense of who they were as a team. Were they a defensive powerhouse? An offensive juggernaut? A scrappy underdog? Even they didn’t seem to know. Without a clear identity, consistency was impossible.
During the 2024 season, the Commanders leaned into a distinct and deliberate identity: discipline, resilience, and high-effort play. Every decision—whether it was a roster move, practice routine, or game plan—was aligned with this vision. The result was not just consistency but a strong foundation on which to build future success.
In Business Terms: An organization must have a clear and cohesive identity. Align every decision—hiring, strategy, and culture—with that identity to create consistency and build trust, both internally and externally.
The Commanders didn’t just transform their team; they rewrote their story. By focusing on long-term vision, empowering the right leaders, and aligning decisions with a core identity, they created a roadmap for sustainable success. These lessons remind us that true transformation requires patience, commitment, and the courage to stay aligned with a bigger purpose.

More Than a Football Team
The Commanders’ resurgence isn’t just a football story—it’s a reflection of our times. And fittingly, they represent our nation’s capital, the true “America’s Team.” Sorry, Cowboys fans.
They fell short of the ultimate goal, but their impact went beyond the scoreboard. In a nation grappling with uncertainty, division, and unease, their rise became a symbol of resilience—a reminder that even in the darkest moments, renewal is possible.
We wake up each day to an unpredictable world, alarms pulling us from restless sleep into a reality that feels unsteady. But the Commanders’ revival showed us what happens when people refuse to give up, when leadership restores faith, and when unity overcomes chaos.
This season, Washington gave their city—and their country—more than a team to rally behind. They gave us pride. Proof that comebacks are possible. A glimpse of what it means to overcome the impossible. Even in defeat, their journey resonates, reminding us of our own battles and the strength to keep pushing forward.
As they walked off the field, their legacy was already written. The standing ovation wasn’t just for the games they won—it was for what they stood for. Hope in uncertainty. Strength in adversity. The belief that better days are ahead.
In a time when so many feel untethered, the Commanders remind us of the power of leadership, unity, and the relentless spirit to rebuild.
They’re not just a football team—they’re a reflection of us all. A reason to stand taller, fight harder, and move forward together.
Hail to the Commanders.
Hail to a Nation.
