Working principle of DCDC converter

DCDC (DC: Direct Current) is a DC-DC converter that converts one DC power supply voltage to another DC voltage level through electronic switching technology. Its main function is to adjust, stabilize or convert the supply voltage to meet the power needs of a specific application.

The DC-DC converter controls the direction of current flow by periodically switching switching devices (usually transistors or MOSFETs) in the circuit, thereby changing the output voltage of the power supply. DC-DC converters include key components such as switching devices, inductors, capacitors, and control circuits. When the switching device is turned on, the inductor stores electrical energy, and when it is turned off, the energy stored in the inductor is released to the output circuit to provide the required voltage. Capacitors are used to smooth the output voltage and reduce voltage ripples. The control circuit monitors the input/output voltage and load conditions and adjusts the operation of the switching devices to maintain the desired output voltage level.

DCDC converter type

DC-DC converters are divided into various types for different voltage conversion needs. Common types are boost, buck, buck-boost, flyback and multi-stage topologies. Different types of transformers have their own advantages in voltage conversion, efficiency, cost and applicable scenarios.

  • Boost ConverterThe boost converter is used to increase the input voltage to the output voltage and consists of a switching device (usually a MOSFET), an inductor and a capacitor. Commonly used in battery-powered equipment, LED lighting, solar cell systems and wireless communications equipment.

  • Buck ConverterThe buck converter is used to reduce the input voltage to the output voltage and includes a switching device, an inductor and a capacitor. It is widely used in scenarios where lower voltage needs to be provided, such as electronic equipment, power adapters, electric vehicles, and mobile phone chargers.

  • Buck-Boost ConverterA buck-boost converter can provide an output voltage higher or lower than the input voltage and includes two switching devices and an inductor. By controlling the on and off of the two switching devices in a timely manner, the voltage can rise and fall. Buck-boost converters have important applications in electric vehicles, solar inverters, portable electronic devices, and energy storage systems.

  • Flyback ConverterA flyback converter is an isolation converter that is typically used to convert an input voltage to an output voltage and provide electrical isolation. It includes a transformer, switching devices, and secondary-side rectifiers. When the switching device is turned on, energy is stored in the magnetic field of the transformer, and when the switching device is turned off, it is transmitted to the output through the secondary side rectifier. Flyback converters are commonly used in scenarios that require electrical isolation and precise output voltage, such as power adapters, battery chargers, medical equipment, and industrial control systems.

  • Multi-level topology converterMulti-level topology converters combine different types of DC-DC converters to achieve more efficient voltage conversion. Common multi-level topologies include Cuk, SEPIC and ?uk-SEPIC, etc., which can provide more complex voltage conversion functions. Multilevel topology converters are often used in special applications such as power factor correction, photovoltaic inverters and high-performance power systems.

When selecting a suitable transformer type, factors such as input voltage, output requirements, load conditions, and cost need to be considered.
