The dynamogram: Paving the way to the organization of the future
In 2020, we claimed that the org.chart is dead and introduced the dynamogram to you: a new way of visualizing an organization that promotes collaboration, combines hierarchies and agile working teams, and fosters cross-functional work. Today, we want to dive deeper into what your organization can achieve with the dynamogram.
Together with our clients, we identified four elements that organizations consider essential to stay successful in the future:
- The best fitting organizational structure: Many organizations are still organized in a rather traditional way. Hierarchies, functional silos, and a lack of collaboration are often the results. These organizations need to change. But how? They often hear about network organizations, self-organized teams, heterarchies and so on and so forth. Yet, these concepts are far away from the reality of these organizations and cannot work either. Addressing this problem, the dynamogram brings together the best from both worlds: traditional hierarchies where needed and agility, self-organization, and cross-functional cooperation wherever possible. It thus helps organizations to truly find their right fit.
- Transparency: Organizations work more and more in cross-functional teams that take care of special innovations for the customer, improve internal processes, or expand the business into a new country. In order to see who is working with whom on what and also to make it easier for employees to start an own initiative, it is therefore crucial to have full and transparency about all entities, teams and people, especially when these structures frequently change, e.g. in times of fast growth or transformation. The dynamogram, and the software that lies behind it, enables organizations to transparently display and update these information – in real time and visible to every employee of the organization.
- Ownership: The transparency described above allows for the key success factor that almost every modern owner or management board craves nowadays: That people can take ownership and get into action whenever they identify a problem that needs solving – whether it be with a product, customer, or internal process, without having to “ask for permission”, and with full support – but also responsibility – for the outcome.
- Sharing & staying connected: The transparency of information is not possible without the willingness to freely share knowledge and to offer it proactively to others. This includes teams and individuals, especially in remote times, being able to easily and frequently connect to keep up motivation, identification, and integrate new team members quickly.
The dynamogram is a software solution that addresses these 4 essential elements. It visualizes the entire organization on one interactive page. Thereby it creates transparency, ownership and makes bad leadership increasingly difficult to sustain. Further, it ensures that the expertise and competencies of every employee finally become seen and heard and the organizations comes closer towards unleashing the full potential of its people. As a result, for many of our clients the dynamogram paves the way to their organization of the future.
