Dynamics GP Support Desk #1: Microsoft Word Form Import Error

Hello everyone! I had a crazy support case that I finally figured out and I thought it might be fun to start sharing these on LinkedIn. They won't be as polished as a GP Tip I'd put on my website. Also, I might post them while I am still working on the case to see if anyone has any tips to help.

I had an issue with a client not being able to import an MS Word Template. I have had clients that do not have the MS Word add-in installed for one reason or another. What I have done in the past was to have them export the report file package via Customization Maintenance. I then import that into my test company and use that to create the XML source when I customize the template. This has worked time and again for other customers.

I did the customizations to the report and emailed it back to them to import and test. When they tried to import, they got this error message:?

All of the suggestions did not help.

We tested if the issue was because the form was modified vs. original. We tested if it was because I included a logo (found that as a suggestion somewhere online). I made sure the MS Word form was set for compatibility. We made sure the file was unlocked. I checked the XML file they sent to make sure it was connected to the correct report format…we tested every single combination of scenarios…and it would import and export fine for me…but then not work for them.

We tried exporting a new MS Word Template from their system and saving on their system and reimporting…and it worked fine. We then emailed that Word file to my email address. I opened and saved and emailed it back (no other changes were made). It errored and didn’t work. Finally, today I thought to have them save what I sent and then send it back to me to test. Finally, I was able to replicate the error. It would not import into my test company.

I opened the file they sent back and found that there were no XML sources connected to the template.

I asked Copilot if email security systems could be removing the XML resources, and I got the answer below:

I am going to work with their IT team to figure out a way to get them the file because they weren't able to receive the ZIP File. So, the case isn't closed...but finally there is light at the end of the tunnel.
