India’s methanol push could fuel a greener, self-reliant future

To combat these challenges, India is embracing cleaner, renewable alternatives like ethanol and methanol, aiming to reduce oil imports, cut carbon emissions, and foster sustainable economic growth.
These initiatives not only address immediate energy security concerns but also create new opportunities for rural development and green job creation, setting India on a path towards a more self-reliant and sustainable future.
LEAD STORY
The dynamics of change: India’s export evolution over the last ten years
India’s export portfolio has experienced subtle shifts over the years, with notable changes in product shares and destination markets. Mineral oils and fuels have increased their share from 9% to 21% of exports, while gems and jewelry have declined from 17% to 9% in 2023 compared to the early 2000s. Check out the latest article by our research team that analyses macro changes in India's export basket and markets over the past 10 years.
In the last decade, the US remains India’s largest export destination, with exports increasing from US$ 42 billion to US$ 75 billion. New markets such as Togo and the Netherlands have shown rapid growth, especially in fuel and technology products, while established markets like China and UAE have seen minor declines in share.
Emerging sectors like electrical machinery, pharmaceuticals, and photovoltaic cells reflect India’s growing manufacturing capabilities in high-tech and green energy. As India adapts to shifting global demands, its export landscape continues to diversify, reinforcing India’s increasingly strategic role in global trade.
India’s rising edible oil prices and the push for self-sufficiency
Over the festive season, a sharp rise in edible oil prices strained household budgets and raised costs for sectors like restaurants, hotels, and sweet shops. Last month, palm oil prices surged by 37%, with mustard oil following close behind at a 29% hike. This surge came in as retail inflation hit a nine-month peak, primarily fueled by climbing food and vegetable prices.
The government has raised import tariffs on crude and refined edible oils, aiming to incentivize local farmers and encourage domestic oilseed production. By supporting local agriculture, the policy seeks to stabilize prices over the long-term and reduce the country’s dependence on costly imports.
