Travelling around Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra this week on our electric scooters was a reminder about how dynamic our work is. We talked about the diversity of our roles, and how fortunate we are to work with so many workplaces and people. Taking this time to appreciate this wonderful place, and reflect on our work here in Canberra gives meaning to how we approach our roles.
The coolness of the air took me back to my role as a Senior Ministerial Advisor and running an electorate office, lucky enough to travel to this wonderful city working at Parliament House. I would often take a break late at night to look up at the flag flying high on the pole in the middle of the building and wondering how I got here. I would often pinch myself reflecting how I was lucky enough to contribute to public policy and be part of helping as many people as possible through my work. At the time, I also felt fortunate to working alongside our current Prime Minister who was a Member of Parliament, and others who were very committed making a positive contribution to their electorates.
The key point is, that I see many people that really enjoy their roles, equally, we see many that do not feel they work in a dynamic environment making a difference. Whilst there are times when our roles do not meet our needs, crafting them on a daily basis can provide motivation and engagement. Job crafting enables a growth mindset and helps to provide meaning and intention to our daily approaches. Approaches such as interval work patterns, being conscious of professional approaches and using effective reflective approaches allows increased connection to our roles. If you need support to craft your role more effectively, touch base, I look forward to hearing from you.
