The Dynamic Development Graduate Scheme - Lankai's story

The Dynamic Development Graduate Scheme - Lankai's story

My name is Lankai, I joined the Home Office almost two years ago as part of the Dynamic Development Graduate Scheme, and I have been working as a Data Analyst for the last 10 months.

You may have seen our?post about Early Talent Week?which includes a list of the opportunities currently on offer.?I wanted to let you know about how I came to join the Home Office and what it’s like to work here as a young person starting their career.

Prior to joining the Home Office, I had just completed my degree in Economics and was tutoring A-Level Economics students. I was not sure about what I wanted to do as a career, but I knew I had a strong interest in data and was open minded when it came to job roles.

This led me to apply for the Dynamic Development Scheme (DDS), which looked like a good match for me. The scheme is a two-year rotational graduate programme providing joiners the opportunity to work in placements in different teams across Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT). I could see that this would allow me to gain exposure to a range of areas across the Home Office within different roles before deciding on what I ultimately wanted to specialise in. As a graduate with little idea of what I wanted to be, this was perfect for me and was a key reason why I joined the Home Office!

My day to day can vary depending on what I’m working on, which I prefer as I always welcome a bit of variety in my work. It can involve the following responsibilities:

  • Perform data quality checking and cleaning.
  • Code, test and correct scripts to query databases.
  • Gather requirements from stakeholders and deliver key analytical findings.
  • Present results of data analysis and recommendations to my team and external stakeholders.
  • Support and collaborate with other Data Analyst and team members.

What I enjoy most about being a Data Analyst is the breadth of work I’ve had the opportunity to get involved in. I’m constantly being challenged in my role as it demands problem solving skills to answer a range of data related questions which can be quite complex at times. This has allowed me to achieve things I never thought I could. I’m given the opportunity to own different projects, while still having the support of my team.

There are many benefits to working in the Home Office, but personally I think the main one is the endless opportunities available to you. Coming straight out of university with little experience of the working world can be daunting; however, since joining the DDS my confidence has grown. Through working in various roles, from Associate Technology Delivery Manager to Policy Advisor and now to Data Analyst, I have developed a range of skills. I have had the opportunity to work with people who are amazing in their roles and are eager to support your development. My scheme also offers learning courses and dedicated time for development which is a huge positive.?As I am now nearing the end of scheme I am aiming to apply for promotion as a Senior Data Analyst.

The different communities of practice within DDaT are great as well. There are groups to collaborate with likeminded people relating to your role, interests or even identity. They can offer solutions to problems you may be having with a piece of work, or just a space to relax and talk about common interests. The flexibility is a major benefit as they can often offer hybrid working and the ability to work flexibly.

I recommend to anyone from any background to consider joining the Home Office. It gives you the opportunity to change your life and other lives for the better!

I would highly recommend working applying for the Dynamic Development Graduate Scheme (DDS). If you’re interested, you could reach out to one of?our lead recruiter?to understand what the role involves and learn more about the application and interview process.
