What an exciting and humbling experience Tuesday night! Sitting down with Julius Onah and Kelvin Harrison, Jr., director and actor in the powerful film and Sundance Festival favorite, Luce, was a huge honor. From the point that we sat down and talked about their experiences preparing and filming the movie, the intelligence and forethought these gentle giants put into making the film was breathtaking.
During the Q&A, we discussed how it seems we are going through another wave of a Black film renaissance. And, the film Luce is another fabulous addition to the full spectrum of courageous and dynamic cinema America and the world seems more able than ever before able to enjoy, be moved by, and share with others. Luce is a complicated and relatable story touching on the model minority myth, interracial adoption, race and the burdens of life in America, respectability politics, and a variety of topics particularly important to our national dialogue today.
Thank you to Alamo Drafthouse for the opportunity to moderate the Q&A. Highly recommend the Luce film that invites us into a world some may find entirely unfamiliar while affirming for those who have struggled and celebrated in ways that needed to be acknowledged and welcomed.
Look out in the coming months for more opportunities to share in dialogues about race, equity, diversity and inclusion. Learn more about EquitySpace 2019 coming on September 19 in Austin, Texas. Early registration provides a $75 discount before August 19.
