Dynamic Art and the Future of Daily Data Representation

The foundation of Transient Labs was primarily built off our experiments with Dynamic Art and the powerful experiences it unlocked, helped of course by the inherent digital nature of NFTs, but what is it really? ??

What is Dynamic Art?

dy·nam·ic - adjective - marked by usually?continuous?and productive activity or change

Looking at the dictionary definition of dynamic as an adjective, it's quite open-ended to what Dynamic Art can be, and that's partly the beauty of it. I would more broadly define it as art that utilizes digital technology to connect to data in order to elevate the experience of those viewing the work. To summarize with emojis: ?? + ??? = ??

This is still somewhat of a broad definition but it's about as narrow looking as I dare to venture. This is an emerging field and I think we have yet to find the boundaries of what could be considered Dynamic Art. To further give you an understanding of what Dynamic Art can be, I'll provide a few examples of work we have done at Transient Labs . There's much more to Dynamic Art than just these examples but they are a good starting place for your understanding.

Dynamic Art Examples

The Sentinel by Ben Strauss

The Sentinel, is the third Dynamic Art piece that Ben and I ever created together. For those unfamiliar with our story, Ben and I became friends in college and worked together as mechanical engineers prior to starting Transient Labs .

During our lunches, we spent the entire time talking NFTs and what could increase the experience for his photography collectors, as Ben is an established photography in and outside of the NFT art space.

The first idea we came up with and implemented was the simple concept of the artwork evolving throughout the day, matching the conditions that you experience in your daily life. Whenever the sun rises, the artwork shows a sunrise. Whenever the sun sets, the artwork shows a sunset. You get the idea.

To add on top of this, we added the moon in the piece actually changes phases with the moon outside. So you can look up at the moon during the night and it will match what you see in the art piece.

The experience of tuning in to this piece of art throughout the entire 24 hour day is absolutely incredible. Furthermore, this artwork creates over 2 million distinct pieces of art by using only 34 photos. Absolutely incredible. ??

Cadence by Rich Caldwell

This piece of art again uses time to aid in the experience, but instead of evolving the scene to match what you see outside as we saw in The Sentinel, it straight up shows you the time. ?? ?? ?? ??

It's an absolute pleasure to view and I much prefer it to looking at my phone for the time! The entire collection called "Hands of Time" follows this motif so definitely make sure to check it out!

Impermanence by Josh Pierce

Can you guess what this Dynamic Art piece is all about from the following emojis?

?? ??? ?? ?? ??? ?? ??? ?? ??? ?? ??

If you guessed weather, you are correct!

We worked with Josh to connect his artwork with the current weather conditions of the viewer. This means that what I see in Denver, Colorado is entirely different from someone in Seattle, Washington. Denver is likely sunny and Seattle is probably rainy (sorry had to get a dig in ??).

If you're not familiar with Josh's 3D surreal landscapes, they are absolutely mesmerizing and the fact that it matches the weather outside creates this additional layer of wanting to check it everyday. I know I personally check this over the silly weather app on my phone.

You definitely want to check this one out!

The Future of Data Representation

Now that you have a good understanding of what Dynamic Art can be, let's dive into why I think it could alter the future of data representation, at least for some data.

First off, as a software developer and ex-automotive and ex-aerospace test engineer, I know that data is hard. Most of all, distilling data into representations that non-technical people can or even want to understand is incredibly challenging. Charts can be difficult to read and worse, they are often misinterpreted. ??♂?

Dynamic Art has a really interesting way to help alleviate some of this difficulty. I'm not saying it replaces charts, graphs, or other classical data representation tools, because it doesn't. But there are many use cases that we encounter in our daily lives that it can enrich. I know I would much rather look at some artwork rather than a notification icon to see how many emails I've missed over a long weekend.

The following daily data points come to mind as things I would rather see in an art form and I'm positive there are many more

  • what the current weather is
  • what the current time is
  • how my stocks are doing
  • my savings account balance
  • how closely I'm following my budget
  • how many unread emails I have
  • how busy my day is with meetings
  • how much sleep I got
  • how much exercise I got
  • my mood
  • if I need to eat something
  • etc

Digital Connectivity + Dynamic Art

As we move more and more into extensive digital connectivity, I believe that we are setting ourselves up for amazing real-world use cases of Dynamic Art as a next generation data representation tool.

If I think about what smart homes will become, it's a little bit scary, but at the same time it's awesome. Smart homes as we know them right now are very basic. Yes, I have a voice assistant that can turn on/off lights when I'm feeling super lazy - cool.

What about a future where all the art is digital, it changes automatically based on time of day, mood, how much sleep I got, etc? Now that's incredible and really only possible with Dynamic Art! I personally can't wait for that day (assuming privacy and security isn't a concern ??).

This future is what Ben and I got really excited about 2 years ago when we founded Transient Labs and we plan on continuing our work to push the boundaries with Dynamic Art, along with everything else we do at Transient Labs !
