An Automatic pressure injected lubricant applicator for wire ropes has substantially extended rope life at Overland Coal in Kentucky the life of 38-mm cable on a 58-mm belt line hauling coal has been extended by an estimated three years as the result of penetration of lubricant to the core of the rope. Lubrication is now necessary only twice a year compared with previous daily attention.
Kirkpatrick Wire Rope Lubrication Systems (Previously sold under the trade name Dynalube) replaces conventional brushing and spraying methods of lubricating wire rope. Instead, the lubricant is pressure injected through a hinged applicator that clamps around the rope. Treatment can take place at any angle, and speeds up to 3,500 m-hr. Moreover, the rope remains in service at all times.
Both oil and high viscosity lubricants can be used. Extremely resistant polyurethane seals retain the pressurized lubricant within the lubrication collar. Seals are available for wire rope from 10-100 mm in diameter.
In Australia, Castrol has recorded up to 90% savings in lubricant consumption using Dynalube? (Now Kirkpatrick Wire Rope Lubrication Systems) in Typical mining applications, and at Teck Corona, in Canada, lubrication speed has been doubled, and rope life increased by 50 -90%.
A 60% reduction in lubricant consumption is reported at a salt mine in Lousiana, where 48-mm cables for product hoists and 38-mm cables for material and personnel hoists are now lubricated by Dynalubes (Now Kirkpatrick Wire Rope Lubrication Systems). Tests also show that loss in tensile strength has been reduced from 10 to 11% to under 2%.
