Dying at home. Is it right for you?

It's something I hadn't thought about as a preferred option for myself until I started worked in the End of Life space.
We have, to some degree, been conditioned to think that the best place to die is in a hospital where we can be given the medical care and pain relief we need to have a comfortable experience, but now I realise there is more to the experience of passing than simply being pain free.
Of course, it's only an option of choice if you have received a diagnosis and can plan those last hours/days yourself.
If your death is sudden or unexpected, your loved ones will need to call triple zero. If you have the time and you wish to die at home there are some things you need to know to help you make it happen. Here is a link to a swag of information on the FREE Australian Government Health Direct website.
For me, personally, I would want to be sure my family were comfortable with having me die at home, and that my husband, if he outlives me, will still feel comfortable living in the home after I'm gone. Once I have done that, I will make the necessary arrangements and leave the necessary instructions for family and friends to make it happen.
Of course, if it's not practical, in the moment, for it to happen, I would trust my family to do the next best thing for me.
They can only do that, if they are fully aware of my wishes.
Don't leave it too late to talk to your family about death and dying and how you'd like it to be handled. None of us know when that time will come for us.
