The Dutch apologies for slavery
My grandmother, mother's, mother was still a slave, a woman my mother knew. I can assure you, slavery was not that long ago! Though I agree with the need for this apology, I disagree with the emptiness of this pursuit. For every crime done to my country, my people, I believe the damage slavery caused must be paid for. Not with words, not in nature, but with money. Our grounds exploided, our people slaughterd, our generation for many years to come mentally en psychologically oppressed.
I happen to live in the Netherlands now, but lived in Surinam for 16 years. I've read and heard the cruelties growing up, the same ones I saw grandmothers applying for their grandchildren, because that's the way they were programmed. And since slavery lasted for 400 years, we deserve payment with your apology as much as the Indonesians, the Jews and the native Indians.
