Durable and Perishable Skills

Durable and Perishable Skills

How can a Skill Perish? That was a question I was asked when I shared on this topic.

Skills that are subject to changes, like technology are all Perishable skills. As an engineering student many decade's ago, I learnt Fortran, C and they were the most important Computer skills to have. Fast-forward to today, you probably dont need to know how to write a code, but you definitely need to know how to ask AI, the right prompts.

Upgrading, unlearning, relearning are some of the most important to keep up to date for Perishable skills.

However, some skills don't change much. Communication skills, Critical thinking, Leadership, Growth mindset, Creativity, Fortitude are skills that are for life. If you excel in them, all you need to do is keep practicing it.

As a Trainer and coach, I would say anyone who take time to learn the Durable skills will always be in demand and find a place in this world.

If you need to know about finding your path to excellence, send me a DM.

Really interesting thoughts here, Swarna Kalyan. Your idea about knowing the right way to use AI was great. On that note, I'm curious about your thoughts on using AI to help us adapt and learn durable skills in a more contextualized and measured way. The possibilities seem really exciting!
